They missed tens of thousands of notifications. And failed to notice it themselves. Consequently, the Australian gambling regulator imposed a fine of €187,000 on Sportsbet.
Thousands of customers received no mandatory statements
Between July 2022 and May 2024, more than 6,000 players did not receive a single monthly activity statement. In total, this amounted to over 50,000 breaches. According to the regulator, this involves not merely a minor error, but a structural failure within Sportsbet’s system.
These statements are mandatory. They give players insight into their gambling behavior and spending. Without that data, control is more difficult. Both for the player and for the regulator.
System error remained unnoticed for years
The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission called the error ‘significant’. Not only because of the number of cases, but mainly because it took so long before it was discovered. According to the regulator, internal controls were lacking to identify the problem in time.
The fine of 206,000 Australian dollars, converted to approximately €187,000, is the result of this prolonged negligence.
Governance also under fire
Besides the fine, the regulator criticized the internal control and accountability within Sportsbet. Large providers have a duty to actively monitor their systems. Especially when it comes to consumer protection.
Australia has become increasingly strict on responsible gambling in recent years. It is not just about advertisements or limits, but also about the functioning of basic measures like these statements.
