In Boulogne-sur-Mer, the Golden Palace casino posted dazzling results for the 2024 financial year. According to the most recent town council meeting, the casino returned more than €1 million to the town, while the state received a much higher sum.
A record financial windfall
Between 1 November 2023 and 21 October 2024, Boulogne-sur-Mer received 1,187,000 euros in respect of the legal municipal levy applied to municipal casinos. The rate used is the maximum authorised, i.e. 15% of gross gaming revenue, compared with 10% in other municipalities.
This rate testifies to the good health of the establishment and enables the town to rake in significant revenue. This is in addition to the usual tax revenues, and contributes directly to the funding of local projects.
While the town is delighted with these figures, the State remains the main beneficiary. Over the same period, it received €4.47 million from taxes and levies on the gaming sector.
In total, more than €5.6 million from the Golden Palace casino has been paid back to the public purse. This is a considerable windfall, reflecting the dynamism of this Boulonnais establishment, which has enjoyed steady growth since its takeover in 2019.
Solid economic performance
The casino’s pre-tax turnover has reached €6.82 million, according to figures released by the municipality. But it is the gross gaming revenue that is most impressive: more than €11 million recorded over the period.
The operator’s report refers to a remarkable performance and an increase in the number of visitors, although this is not quantified. The casino currently has 75 slot machines, some of which were recently renewed, as well as four gaming tables. A total of 42 people work there full-time.
There are several reasons for this good dynamic. The renewal of the slot machines has helped to modernise the offering and attract new players. The establishment has also benefited from a loyal local clientele and an upsurge in tourist numbers.
A major player on the Côte d’Opale
Today, the Golden Palace in Boulogne-sur-Mer has established itself as a key economic player in the region. The establishment attracts not only local residents, but also visiting tourists, who are attracted by the range of leisure activities on offer and the constant modernisation of the facilities.
The Belgian company, already well-established in Europe, intends to strengthen its presence in France. For the city, this success could be an opportunity to rethink its long-term tourism and economic strategy.
