Heavy fine for Jacks gambling ad at popular car event

The JACKS logo was visible everywhere during a major racing event in the Netherlands. JOI Gaming has now received the bill for it: a fine of 400,000 euros. According to the Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit), the company violated the ban on role models in gambling advertisements during JACK’S Racing Day 2023.

A race full of speed, sound, and marketing

JACK’S Racing Day is Europe’s largest combined car, motorcycle, and kart racing event. Every year, thousands of fans flock to the TT Circuit Assen for a weekend full of spectacle.

But in 2023, it wasn’t just about engine power. Famous faces signed autographs on JACKS merchandise and posed visibly with the brand. That is exactly what is not allowed in the gambling world.

Role models attract young adults

The rules are crystal clear: no role models may be used for online gambling. Think of celebrities, former athletes, or influencers. They are precisely the ones who appeal to young people—a group that is extra sensitive to gambling advertisements.

According to the regulator, this poses an unacceptable risk. JOI Gaming had previously received a warning and an order to remove social media posts. Those have since been taken offline.

Why this fine is only known now

The legal aftermath took place partly behind the scenes. JOI Gaming asked the court for a preliminary injunction: a temporary halt on making the sanction public.

The judge partially granted that request. Now that this period is over, the Kansspelautoriteit is making the fine public after all. A signal, it seems, to the entire gambling industry.
