The Kansspelautoriteit, the Dutch Gambling Authority, and Roda JC are closely examining the gambling behavior of young people in the Parkstad area. They aim to understand exactly what is happening among these young adults.
Gambling appears to be increasingly prevalent among young people, particularly sports betting. The Dutch Gambling Authority and the football club Roda JC are concerned about this situation. Together, they are launching a study to understand precisely what is happening among young adults in the Parkstad area.
They want to know young people’s opinions on sports betting. Do they gamble a lot? How often? And why? The answers should help raise awareness among young people about the risks, such as losses, peer pressure, and the idea that “everyone else is doing it.”
What makes this collaboration special? Roda JC deliberately refuses any partnership with gambling companies. At a time when almost every club is saturated with gambling advertising, this stance is particularly striking.
For many young people, gambling is now part of everyday life
Many young people are confronted with sports betting on a daily basis. Ads on Instagram, tips in WhatsApp groups, bets among friends… Under these circumstances, it’s difficult to resist temptation.
At Roda JC, we’ve seen this too. That’s why we want to open a dialogue. Not by accusing anyone, but by asking questions. What’s your opinion on the matter? Do you feel compelled to bet?
The Kansspelautoriteit isn’t acting without reason. Previous research, such as the study conducted by Trimbos, has already shown that young people are starting to gamble earlier and more frequently. A worrying trend.
Together, they want to encourage young people to think critically
The study will continue until the end of December. In 2026, the results will be used to develop educational programs and campaigns. Not with moralizing speeches, but with stories that truly resonate with young people.
This follows in the footsteps of the recent anti-betting campaign during the Euros, which warns against the “match of your life”, the kind of match that can sometimes simply cost you money.
The collaboration between a football club and a regulatory organisation may seem unusual. But that’s precisely what makes it effective. When sports and politics come together, positive outcomes can occur. And that’s precisely the goal.
