On 15 May 2025, the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) announced that a Danish streamer had accepted a fine of DKK 10,000 (approximately €1,350) for repeatedly promoting unauthorised gambling operators via his Twitch channel. This decision followed a police investigation launched by the Danish regulator.
Repeated breaches detected
The case dates back to 2023, when Spillemyndigheden identified that the streamer in question was promoting unlicensed Danish gambling operators through his live broadcasts on Twitch. After gathering evidence, the regulator reported the case to the police. The streamer was found guilty of breaching Danish gambling legislation.
Spillemyndigheden said:
‘The streamer has in several cases advertised game providers without a Danish licence through his Twitch channels.’
The police concluded that the streamer had breached Danish gambling legislation. The fine of DKK 10,000 corresponds to the amount proposed by Spillemyndigheden. This is the second time that the Danish regulator has successfully prosecuted a streamer for promoting unauthorised gambling operators.
A warning to the online community
The Danish Gambling Authority points out that only licensed providers are permitted to offer or promote gaming services in Denmark, and that content creators must also comply with these regulations.
As the boundaries between entertainment, gambling and gaming continue to blur, European regulators are stepping up their efforts to monitor digital channels and ensure compliance with national laws. Platforms such as Twitch and YouTube have already been criticised for hosting gambling-related content, leading some to introduce stricter guidelines.
What is Twitch?
Twitch is a live video streaming platform, primarily used to stream video games in real time. Founded in 2011 and acquired by Amazon in 2014, it allows content creators known as streamers to share their screen, interact with their community via live chat, and sometimes earn money through subscriptions, donations or sponsorships. While video games remain at the heart of Twitch, the platform has diversified to include music, sport, chat and, unfortunately, sometimes illegal content.
