Problems associated with gambling do not always leave visible traces, until the consequences become impossible to ignore. This observation is at the heart of Speeltermeer, a campaign launched at the beginning of January aimed at professionals in contact with people at risk.
An often invisible reality
Gambling addiction is not always visible on the face. Unlike other forms of addiction, it can remain hidden behind an appearance of normality for a long time. Work, social life, family responsibilities: everything may seem to be intact, even though gambling is taking on an increasingly intrusive role.
Speeltermeer is convinced that professionals can make a difference. Their privileged position, close to individuals, gives them a unique ability to spot changes in behaviour, unusual financial difficulties or widespread malaise.
A collective reflection at the origin of the project
Speeltermeer is the result of recent discussions with other organisations and experts in the field. Together, they worked on the design of a new e-learning course devoted to gambling problems. Gambling addiction is no longer seen as an individual problem, but as a societal issue requiring a coordinated response.
At the heart of the programme is an e-learning course designed specifically for professionals. This e-learning course aims to deepen understanding of the mechanisms of problem gambling and refine detection skills.
A necessary change of perspective
In addition to the tools, Speeltermeer proposes a change of perspective. It invites us to look beyond the clichés associated with problem gambling. No, addiction does not only affect marginal profiles. No, it does not always manifest itself through spectacular signs.
Speeltermeer does not claim to solve the problem of gambling addiction on its own. But it does lay an essential foundation: that of knowledge and dialogue. By helping people to see what they can’t always see, the campaign paves the way for more humane, more effective prevention.
