10,000 Belgians give up gambling via itsme
A symbolic milestone has just been reached in Belgium: more than 10,000 people have chosen to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling using itsme.
An unprecedented record for gaming exclusions
On 31 October, the Gaming Commission (GC) announced that it had passed the threshold of 10,000 voluntary exclusions using itsme, the digital identification application, since the beginning of 2025.
Launched at the end of 2021, the ability to request an exclusion through itsme has simplified the process and enabled many players to act quickly and discreetly. According to the Commission, around 1,000 exclusions are recorded every month, a stable but impressive figure that reflects a real increase in awareness.
A simple approach with a strong impact
One of the strengths of the system is its ease of access. In just a few minutes, a player can ask to be excluded from legal betting and gaming platforms, without having to go through cumbersome administrative procedures. The exclusion is then applied to all approved sites in Belgium.
This self-exclusion can be temporary or permanent, depending on the user’s choice. It is a way of protecting against compulsive behaviour, limiting financial losses and taking a step back from a sometimes intrusive activity.
The growing number of exclusions also reflects a change in Belgians’ relationship with gambling. Once taboo, the subject of problem gambling is now part of the public debate, particularly with the rise of online sports betting and virtual casinos. Awareness-raising campaigns in recent years have helped to change attitudes by highlighting the risks associated with addiction.
