Roulette: The complete online guide

Roulette, who doesn’t know it? This game has been around for so long that it’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word “casino”. Online casinos allow players to access a wide variety of roulettes. The European and American versions are the most common. With this guide we take you to discover their characteristics. We explain how to play roulette and give you some additional tips.

European or American Roulette?

The decision to play European or American roulette online comes down to personal preference. Want better chances of winning? The European version is probably more suitable. On the other hand, for a little more excitement and a greater challenge, American roulette will be the best choice.

European Roulette: Maximizing the chances of winning

European roulette is seen as the classic version of the game. This roulette is made up of 37 boxes numbered from 0 to 36 placed in a circle. There is only one green “0” box. The house edge is 2.7%, which is relatively low compared to other casino games. This makes European roulette the preferred choice for players looking to maximize their chances of winning.

American Roulette: An additional challenge

In American roulette a box with an additional zero is added: the “double zero”. This modification increases the house edge to 5.26%. This difference makes American roulette more difficult, but also more exciting for some players who like a challenge.

How to play roulette?

Playing roulette starts with understanding how a game plays. Online or in a physical casino, the principle remains the same.

Here are the key steps to playing roulette:

1

Choice of variant

You must decide which version of roulette you want to play. Online casinos offer many variations of roulette and live roulette.

2

Place bets

Before throwing the ball into the roulette wheel, the dealer invites players to place bets. Each player places their bets on the roulette table. Bets can be placed on a specific number. You can also bet on a color or a range of numbers.

3

Throwing the ball

The dealer throws the ball into the wheel. Players continue to place bets until the dealer announces, “No more bets” This means that the bets are closed.

4

Result

The ball stops in one of the spaces on the wheel. The winnings are distributed to players according to their prediction. Winners receive x times their bets, and losers’ bets are collected by the casino.

The different roulette bets

Roulette betting can be classified into different categories.

Inside bets

  • Straight: Bet on a single number. The payoff for this type of bet is 35 to 1.
  • Split: Bet on two adjacent numbers on the table. The gain is 17 to 1.
  • Street: Bet on three numbers in the same horizontal line. The gain is 11 to 1.
  • Corner: Bet on four numbers forming a square on the table. The gain is 8 to 1.
  • First Four: Bet on the first four numbers on the table, 0 included. The gain is 8 to 1.
  • Line: Bet on two adjacent horizontal lines (six numbers). The payoff is 5 to 1.

Outside bets

  • Column: Bet on one of three vertical columns of 12 numbers. The gain is 2 to 1.
  • Dozen: Bet on a group of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36). The payoff is also 2 to 1.
  • Red or Black: Bet on the color of the winning number. The payoff is 1 to 1.
  • Even or Odd: Bet on whether the winning number will be even or odd. The payoff is 1 to 1.
  • High or Low: Bet if the winning number will be in the number group 1 to 18 (Miss) or 19 to 36 (Pass). The payoff is 1 to 1.

Zero Game

Next to the traditional playing mat there is often an oval playing mat reminiscent of a racetrack with all the roulette numbers in their actual order. This secondary stack is used for bets around zero.

  • Zero game: Bet on zero and the 6 neighboring numbers using 4 chips.
  • Series 0/2/3: This is the big series. This time we use 9 chips to bet on the 17 numbers against zero.
  • Orphans: This term refers to the 8 numbers which do not appear in the previous series. To bet on these 8 numbers, it costs 5 tokens.
  • Tiers: This is what we call the small series. We bet on the remaining 12 numbers at the same time. This costs 6 tokens.

Strategies and tips

Playing roulette online allows you to use various strategies without pressure. The Martingale system and the D’Alembert system are strategies among others that can increase the chances of winning.
