ANJ unveils an e-learning module to protect at-risk players
The French National Gaming Authority (ANJ) has taken a decisive step in its fight against excessive gambling. With the launch of an innovative e-learning module, the organization aims to transform the way casino and gambling club professionals identify and support players in difficulty.
But what exactly does this module offer? And why is it so crucial in a context where problematic gambling behavior is raising growing concerns?
An unprecedented immersion in the heart of casinos
Let’s imagine a casino recreated in 3D. The lights, the sounds, the excitement of the gaming tables… Everything is designed to immerse learners in an immersive experience. For about an hour, this virtual setting becomes an interactive learning environment where explanatory videos, practical cases and multiple-choice questionnaires alternate.
“This module is an immersive version of the content of our guide published last January,” explains Maxime Agator, head of excessive gambling prevention at the ANJ. According to him, this training aims to provide tools and practical advice to professionals to better support players.
The course ends with an assessment. Participants who obtain a score of 80% or more receive a certificate, symbolizing their mastery of the skills needed to identify and support at-risk players.
Why is such a tool necessary?
A 2021 study reveals that more than a third of French adolescents aged 15 to 17 have already gambled, and among them, one in five is identified as an at-risk player. While this data concerns young people, it reflects a worrying trend that also affects adults.
In light of these findings, the ANJ is increasing its initiatives. In addition to the module, a guide entitled “Identification and support of excessive or pathological players” was published in early 2024. This document offers operators concrete solutions to detect problematic behavior and act accordingly.
But is it enough? Some experts point out flaws in current prevention systems. “The tools are often poorly presented or difficult to access,” emphasizes a specialist interviewed by Le Monde.
A strengthened commitment to player protection
The ANJ initiative does not stop at training. Since 2021, a reference framework has imposed strict obligations on operators in terms of preventing excessive gambling. This includes the development of annual action plans and the implementation of concrete systems in gaming establishments.
However, the challenge remains immense. Between the commercial interests of operators and the needs of players, the line is sometimes thin. The e-learning module is intended to be a pragmatic response to these issues, with an emphasis on human support.
An expected impact on the ground
What results can be expected? According to the ANJ, this module could become a key tool to raise awareness among professionals about their responsibilities. “If operators use these resources proactively, it could really change the game,” says an expert.
However, the success of this initiative will depend on its adoption by industry players. Will casinos and gaming clubs integrate these practices into their daily lives?
Another step towards responsible gaming
The ANJ’s e-learning represents a significant step forward in preventing pathological gambling behavior. It also illustrates a desire to strengthen player safety while making professionals more responsible.
