Cashier sentenced after repeated theft in Amersfoort

In Amersfoort, a cashier from the Primera chain was sentenced to community service after being caught stealing scratch-off tickets from the shop where she worked. The shop owner discovered several torn tickets in the bin behind the till. CCTV footage later confirmed that the cashier had taken the tickets without paying for them.

An unforgiving past

Two years ago, the woman was working in catering at the Octopus aquatic centre in Leusden. An incident was reported when a lack of funds was noted. The cameras showed that she had taken two notes totalling 30 euros from the cash register. The court ruled that the case had been sufficiently dealt with, and the sentence was suspended.

Despite this background, the cashier was hired at Primera in Amersfoort. The owner, aware of the story, wanted to give her another chance.

“We hired her when we heard about what had happened at the swimming pool. We gave her a chance, and now, as a small business, we have to deal with this situation. I feel really betrayed. It shouldn’t have happened like that, she wasn’t a bad employee.”

The start of a new series of thefts

In February, the situation escalated again. The cashier informed her employer via an app that she had won €400 with scratch cards from the shop. She requested authorisation to collect the winnings, deducting the price of the unpaid ticket.

The owner agreed to the transaction, but pointed out that buying and playing tickets during working hours was not permitted. However, he soon discovered several torn tickets in the bin, a sign that the cashier had continued to take tickets without paying for them.

Irrefutable proof from the cameras

CCTV footage shows that one day, the cashier took four scratch-off tickets and scanned them without paying. According to the public prosecutor’s office:

“The images show that she took two tickets in the morning. She tears up one of them, which is apparently not a winner, and puts the other, the winning ticket, in her pocket, then pays herself €10 from the till. The footage might give the impression that you take a few tickets, scratch until you win one, then say to your employer: ‘I’ve won something, can I get paid?’”

Despite the video evidence, the cashier denied stealing the tickets and even accused her employer of taking the draws.

Verdict and penalty

The judge ruled that the CCTV images constituted irrefutable evidence. The cashier was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, suspended for a further 40 hours. She will also have to reimburse her former employer for approximately €300 in administrative costs.
