Everything you need to know about deposit limits at casinos in Belgium

Do you have questions about deposit limits at legal casinos in Belgium? Then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about deposit limits at online casinos. What is a deposit limit? Who does it apply to? How can you increase it? How can you decrease it? Deposit limits will no longer be a mystery to you.

Since 20 October 2022, the deposit limit at online casinos has been reduced from €500 to €200 for all players. At the time, this new deposit limit was presented as a brand new measure to protect players. Today, this limit is sometimes questioned, but it is still very much in force.

What is the deposit limit?

The deposit limit in online casinos is a responsible gaming mechanism that sets a cap on the total amount a player can deposit into their account over a given period, usually per day, week or month. Its purpose is to prevent excessive gambling behaviour and reduce the risk of addiction. Once the limit is reached, the player cannot add any more money to their balance until the relevant period has elapsed, even if they wish to continue playing.

In Belgium, regulations are particularly strict. The maximum deposit limit is set at €200 per week per casino. This limit is automatically set on each player account. Players can request to reduce it at any time, and the reduction is applied immediately. However, if they wish to increase it, the operator is required to carry out checks. The increase is not automatic.

What is the weekly deposit limit?

By default, the weekly deposit limit is €200. This means that when you create a player account at a legal casino in Belgium, you are automatically subject to this limit and can only deposit a maximum of €200 per week.

The deposit limit is not centralised; it is specific to each casino. You can therefore deposit £200 in several casinos during the same week.

Who does the deposit limit apply to in the UK?

The deposit limit is the same for all players. It applies to everyone, without distinction. Only an increase in this limit is subject to specific criteria and must be approved by the Gambling Commission.

Lowering the deposit limit

Do you think that €200 per week is a bit too much for you? First of all, you should know that you are not obliged to deposit €200 per week at the casino where you want to play. In fact, all casinos in Belgium allow deposits starting at €10, and some even start at €5. In other words, you can deposit any amount you want as long as it does not exceed €200.

If you are afraid of being tempted to deposit too much money, you can ask the casino to lower your deposit limit. This can usually be done very easily in your player account. When you request a reduction in your limit, it is approved and applied within seconds.

Increasing the deposit limit

€200 per week may be a lot of money for some players, but this may not be the case for you and you may want to increase this limit. This is possible under certain conditions.

Most casinos allow you to request an increase or removal of your limit directly in your player account. If this is not the case at your favourite casino, please contact customer support.

Once your request has been submitted, the Gaming Commission takes over. It is the Commission that gives the operator permission to increase or remove your limit. If the request is approved, your new limit will be active after 72 hours.

‼️ Only individuals who are not registered as being in default with the National Bank’s Central Credit Register for Individuals may request an increase or removal of this limit.

📌 I am registered with the National Bank. Can I increase my deposit limit?

No. Only individuals who are not registered as being in default of payment with the National Bank’s Central Individual Credit Register can request an increase or removal of the weekly deposit limit.

📌 Is there a monthly deposit limit on online casinos in Belgium?

No, there is only a weekly limit. Of course, this also limits the amount you can deposit in a month, but it is based on a weekly amount. This means that if you deposit £200, you must wait until the following week to deposit again. It is not possible to deposit the theoretical monthly maximum in a single transaction.

📌 Is the deposit limit linked to one casino or to all casinos?

The deposit limit is set per player and per casino. In other words, when you have reached your limit at one casino, you can deposit money at another casino until you reach your limit again. There is no centralised limit as in Germany.

📌 What is the weekly deposit limit in Belgian casinos?

By default, the weekly deposit limit is set at €200 for all players without distinction. Upon request to the casino, it is possible to decrease, increase or even completely remove this limit.

📌 Does the deposit limit also apply in land-based casinos?

No, there is no weekly deposit limit in physical casinos. Instead, there is an hourly loss limit. In slot machine rooms, this loss averages €25/hour, while in casinos with croupiers, such as the Chaudfontaine casino, the loss is around €70/hour.
Hourly losses in physical gaming establishments are established by law and determined by Royal Decree. However, these amounts are averages calculated over a very large number of games (more than 200,000), so it is possible that as a player you may lose more than this amount in an hour.
