Gaming Commission warns in new figures: significant increase in young players
Online gambling is growing rapidly in Belgium. According to the Gaming Commission’s annual report, the increase among young people is particularly striking. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 are gambling more often and for longer than ever before.
The report makes it clear that this age group spends more time and money on online gambling on average. They are overrepresented in risky behaviour, such as betting more often after a loss or gambling late at night. The Commission speaks of a worrying trend that requires further investigation.
Smartphones and sports betting as a gateway
Most young people start with online sports betting, often via their smartphone. Gambling apps and mobile websites make gambling accessible at any time of the day. The line between gaming and gambling is also blurring, especially with bonuses and “daily spins” that can quickly become addictive.
According to the Gaming Commission, the risk of addiction among young people is not only due to availability, but also to peer pressure and misunderstandings about the odds of winning. They often think they are in control, but quickly get into financial trouble.
Stricter rules and awareness needed
In its 2024 report, the Commission calls for more prevention and education for young adults. It also asks that platforms exercise more control over age and playing time.
In this context, the role of responsible gaming behaviour within the sector is more important than ever. According to experts, initiatives supported by staff and providers can contribute to behavioural change.
In addition, steps are being taken towards responsible advertising, so that young people are less likely to come into contact with tempting promotions. The Gaming Commission emphasises that prevention must also take place outside gambling sites.
