La Bañeza, in the province of León, was still marked by the scars of a devastating forest fire last August, which consumed tens of thousands of hectares and forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Thanks to the sale of numerous tickets bearing the winning number, the people of La Bañeza shared in the sum of 468 million euros, a rare and considerable amount for this emblematic lottery.
The town’s mayor, Javier Carrera, made no secret of his emotion. For many, this jackpot is seen not only as a source of joy, but also as a blessing after some difficult months.
The story doesn’t stop at La Bañeza. Residents of Villablino, another neighbouring village that had suffered a fatal mining accident earlier in the year, were also among the winners, sharing part of the jackpot winnings.
