Zandvoort becomes owner of oldest Holland Casino branch
The municipality of Zandvoort has bought the former casino building of Holland Casino at the Badhuisplein for more than 8,7 million euros. (8.715.001 euros to be exact)
On Friday 31st, 2025, this branch closed its doors for good. This location was known as the oldest branch of Holland Casino.
Petra De Ruiter (CEO Holland Casino) acknowledges the connection the casino has with Zandvoort. According to her, history was written here. But what does the future hold for the building?
How did it come to a closure?
This news was announced last year in October due to disappointing financial results. Because the oldest branch had been operating at a loss for an extended period, its closure proved inevitable.
Shortly after the closure, the municipality of Zandvoort announced its intention to buy the plot and revealed big plans for it.
To prevent the land from falling into the hands of project developers who could obstruct their plans with a view to the redevelopment of the Badhuisplein, the municipality used their preferential right. The municipality therefore had the first right to purchase, which means that Zandvoort can map out the future plans for this itself.
What will the future bring for Zandvoort?
The redevelopment of the Badhuisplein has priority within the municipality. They presented an urban development plan for a luxury hotel to be built between the boulevard and the former casino.
Work must now be done on drawing up a new urban development plan that ties in with this for the part where the casino building is located, so that the municipality can finally put its plans for the Badhuisplein into effect.
The purchase also gives the seaside resort access to the underground parking garage beneath the casino, which will provide 110 additional parking spaces.
Joint approval by the municipal council
Last Tuesday, the council officially approved the purchase and the plans that the municipality has in mind. For the accompanying parking garage of the casino, 100.000 euros have been reserved for renovation and the installation of new security and parking systems.
The parking garage will serve as a public eye-catcher and they will also investigate whether the former building can be used temporarily in the coming period.
Alderman Jan-Jaap de Kloet responded on the official website of Zandvoort:
“This purchase is of great importance for the development of the Badhuisplein. We now have full control over the development of the square. With this purchase, we can give the area the quality boost it deserves. I am also very pleased that we can also open the casino’s parking garage to visitors to Zandvoort.”
After the approval of the purchase of the former casino building, OPZ and Jong Zandvoort filed a motion of censure against alderman de Kloet because of alleged incorrect information to the municipal council. However, their opinion did not receive any additional support within the municipal council.
On the contrary, the other council members openly expressed their support for the alderman. Now that the municipality also owns the casino, they are already thinking about a new destination for this piece of land. Housing development is certainly a real possibility. It’s a topic that will no doubt continue to spark much discussion within the seaside resort.
