BetBlocker returns to the Google Play Store

Reading time: 2 minutes After a five-year absence, the free BetBlocker application, designed to help users protect themselves against online gambling sites, is back on the Google Play Store . This reinstatement marks the end of a long-running technical dispute between the application’s developers and Google.
A prolonged absence finally resolved
The initial problem concerned the difficulty of uninstalling the application, an intentional feature designed to prevent users from bypassing their own block. However, this feature conflicted with Google’s policies, which required apps to be easily uninstallable.
Duncan Garvie, founder of BetBlocker, explained on LinkedIn that this led to a prolonged absence of the app from the Play Store, forcing users to download the app directly from the official website. This alternative method presented security warnings, deterring many potential users.
The situation changed for the better when Garvie was put in touch with Antony Lewis, a partner engineer at Google. Thanks to this collaboration, technical adjustments were made to the application to comply with Play Store requirements. These changes have enabled BetBlocker to regain its place on the platform, providing better visibility and a more secure installation for users.
Garvie expressed his gratitude to those involved in the process, stating:
‘Thousands of people in the coming months will be grateful for your efforts.’
BetBlocker: a free, open-source solution
BetBlocker is a free open-source application that allows users to restrict access to over 10,000 online gambling sites. Designed to help those who want to control their gambling behaviour, the application offers blocking periods ranging from 24 hours to 5 years, or even indefinitely.
Available on multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, BetBlocker collects no user data and relies entirely on donations for its funding. Since 2021, the app has also been available in Dutch, thanks to the support of gaming company L&L Europe.
Unlike other regulatory systems such as Cruks in the Netherlands or the EPIS list in Belgium, which focus on legal operators, BetBlocker also blocks access to unauthorised gambling sites, offering users more comprehensive protection.
A major step forward in preventing problem gambling
The return of BetBlocker to the Google Play Store represents a significant step forward in the fight against problem gambling. By facilitating access to effective prevention tools, this reintegration helps to strengthen consumer protection measures in the field of online gambling.
