Holland Casino considering major reorganization in 2026
Holland Casino may be facing a major reorganization in 2026. The reason is the upcoming increase in the gambling tax to 37.8%. This measure hits the state-owned company hard, especially as it is already under financial pressure.
Tax increase affects even profitable branches
In the first half of 2025, Holland Casino still recorded a profit of €14.2 million. That profit was mainly due to cost savings and the closure of branches in Groningen and Zandvoort. The tax hike now threatens to reduce those figures again. Both online and land-based casinos fall under the higher rate.
Union De Unie calls for extension of social plan
The De Unie union has asked the company to extend the current social plan by one year. The plan is set to expire on February 28, 2026. According to De Unie, this extension is crucial to provide clarity for employees. So far, however, Holland Casino has not made a decision on the matter.
The union calls it “incomprehensible” that the company is exploring alternatives. “That creates unnecessary uncertainty,” says De Unie. The FNV union is also sending a joint letter this week to put additional pressure on the state-owned company.
Uncertainty over early retirement scheme
The unions also want clarity regarding the RVU (early retirement) scheme. Employees who wish to stop working before July 1, 2026, must submit their applications before April 1, 2026. That deadline may fall right in the middle of the reorganization. The unions are therefore requesting prompt discussions.
There is also internal unrest. According to the union, some employees are being “declared 5% sick.” This can only be done with approval from the company doctor, but communication about it remains unclear. Both parties now want to improve this communication.
For those curious about the impact of a possible jackpot at Holland Casino, one player won a large prize while waiting in one of the state casino’s venues.
Concerns are mounting as tens of thousands of players may turn to the illegal gambling market if closures occur. That pressure could further tighten the state company’s position.
