Over €102,000 embezzled from Fair Play Casino

A Dutch court has ordered a former employee of Fair Play Casino to repay €102,880 following a fraud committed over several years. The man, who worked as a cashier at a Rotterdam branch, was also sentenced to community service and a suspended prison sentence.
A fraud that spanned nearly two years
According to the court ruling reported by CasinoNieuws.nl, the former cashier at Fair Play Casino in Rotterdam exploited his access to the till system between July 2021 and February 2023. During this period, he recorded payments for fictitious winnings in order to transfer money for his own benefit and that of people in his circle.
The investigation established that these payments did not correspond to any actual winnings. The total loss suffered by the casino operator amounts to €102,880.
The court ruled that the acts constituted aggravated fraud and a breach of trust. The judges emphasised that the role of cashier requires impeccable integrity and the utmost rigour in the management of funds. By using his position to create false payments, the former employee caused significant financial loss to his employer.
After being caught in February 2023, the man had admitted to the embezzlement to investigators appointed by Fair Play Casino.
A defence rejected by the court
Subsequently, the defendant retracted his confession. He claimed that his confession was unreliable, explaining that he had been under the influence of cannabis at the time of his interview with the company’s investigators.
However, the court did not accept this argument, deeming this version of events implausible. The judges therefore confirmed the former employee’s responsibility for all the embezzlement.
Full repayment and criminal penalties
In addition to being ordered to repay the full sum of €102,880 embezzled, the court sentenced the former cashier to 180 hours of community service.
He was also given a four-month suspended prison sentence. This sentence is slightly less severe than that sought by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The former employee has since been dismissed by Fair Play Casino and no longer works for the company. Provided no appeal is lodged, the casino will recover the full amount embezzled in a single payment via the State. The State will then take charge of recovering the funds from the convicted person and will draw up a repayment schedule. If the payment commitments are not met, the suspended prison sentence may be enforced.
