Scratch cards: €25 million fraud scandal
An alleged scratch card fraud scheme has shaken Italy. Five former employees of a licensed gambling operator are suspected of identifying winning tickets in advance, allowing their relatives and acquaintances to collect substantial prizes. Authorities have seized more than €25 million in assets as part of the investigation.
€25 million in assets seized in Rome
An investigation conducted by the Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s financial police, has uncovered an alleged fraud scheme involving Italian lottery scratch cards. Investigators have seized assets worth more than €25 million belonging to five former employees of a licensed gambling company.
The seized assets include 25 properties, several vehicles and various financial holdings linked to the individuals under investigation.
How did the suspects allegedly identify winning tickets?
At the heart of the case is a method that allegedly allowed the suspects to circumvent the random nature of scratch card games. The five former employees are suspected of exploiting their privileged access to their company’s computer systems to identify winning tickets before they were distributed to retailers.
According to information reported by Italian newspaper La Stampa, the suspects allegedly used confidential login credentials to access computer servers and view or modify certain data. These operations reportedly allowed them to determine in advance which tickets contained the largest prizes.
The investigation focuses specifically on four tickets offering exceptionally large prizes.
Four winning tickets worth €24 million
In total, the four tickets identified in the investigation represented €24 million in potential winnings. According to investigators, the former employees did not purchase the tickets themselves. Instead, they allegedly asked family members and friends to buy them.
The tickets were reportedly purchased at several retail outlets across Italy. This geographical distribution was allegedly intended to conceal connections between the winners and the individuals who had access to confidential information.
Investigators therefore suspect that a network of relatives and acquaintances was involved in obtaining the tickets that had been identified in advance.
The company itself is not accused despite the allegations
The suspicions centre on the misuse of internal access privileges that allegedly allowed sensitive information about the tickets to be viewed or manipulated before they went on sale.
However, one important detail should be highlighted: according to the available information, the licensed gambling company itself is not facing any accusations.
The investigation focuses on the alleged actions of the five former employees and the individuals who may have participated in purchasing the tickets.
At this stage, the alleged offences remain accusations. The criminal liability of those involved has not been established by a final court ruling.
What happens next in the alleged scratch card fraud case?
The next decisive step will be the judicial review of the assets seized from the suspects.
Meanwhile, the criminal and financial investigations will need to establish whether the former employees actually exploited their access to computer systems to arrange for winning tickets to be purchased by people close to them.
The outcome of the proceedings will also determine to what extent the seized assets may be used to compensate for the alleged financial losses.
