Denmark: Regulators join forces against illegal gambling advertising

In Denmark the Spillemyndigheden the gambling regulator, the Spilreklamenævnet Gaming Advertising Commission and the Forbrugerombudsmanden national ombudsman have joined forces. With the aim of strengthening compliance with the advertising rules for gambling companies.

Advertising Rules Guide

Earlier this year the Spillemyndigheden published a guide with information about the advertising rules for gambling companies in Denmark. This included guidelines that gambling companies must adhere to. Especially when recruiting new players. Violations of the advertising rules would be reported to the national ombudsman.

Advertising for gambling companies can span multiple jurisdictions. The new cooperation agreement aims to:

  • Increase the efficiency of enforcement of advertising rules.
  • Avoid duplication of work.
  • Strengthen overall coordination between the three parties.
  • Specific agreements

The agreement states that the Gaming Advertising Commission will forward cases to the supervisory authority and ombudsman. If gambling companies do not comply with the commission’s instructions. Even when there are violations of the advertising rules, the parties will take action.

The ombudsman and supervisor will refer people who want to file a complaint about advertising from gambling companies to the Gaming Advertising Commission. This will further investigate and process the complaint.

The three regulators have agreed to meet annually to evaluate the collaboration and to inform each other about relevant developments in the field of gambling advertising.
