Amsterdam launches pilot project to combat gambling harm

Gambling addiction is a global problem that affects millions of people. To address this, Amsterdam recently launched an innovative pilot project: the Steunpunt Gokschade (Gambling Harm Support Centre). This ambitious programme aims to provide immediate and personalised support to individuals and families affected by this addiction.

A refuge in the heart of Amsterdam

Located on Keizersgracht, one of the Dutch capital’s iconic canals, the Steunpunt Gokschade stands out for its human-centred approach. The easily accessible centre provides qualified professionals as well as peers who have overcome their own addictions.

“By opening our doors here, we want to show that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness,” explains one of the counsellors present at the launch. The centre offers advice, awareness sessions and workshops to educate the public on the risks associated with gambling.

An initiative supported by the Addiction Prevention Fund

The funding for the Steunpunt Gokschade comes from the  Addiction Prevention Fund Verslavingspreventiefonds (VPF), created in 2021. This fund, funded by a special tax imposed on gambling operators, is managed by the Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa). The objective is clear: to reduce the harmful consequences of gambling while making industry players more responsible.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at limiting the harm caused by gambling, in particular through prevention and support for problem gamblers. According to statistics, around 4% of gamblers in Europe show signs of addiction.

What are the objectives of this pilot project?

The Steunpunt Gokschade has set itself several missions:

  • Offer immediate support: via free and anonymous consultations.
  • Raise awareness among the population: through workshops and information campaigns.
  • Evaluate the results: An evaluation report will be published in a year to determine whether the program should be extended to other cities.

With the Steunpunt Gokschade, Amsterdam is tackling a silent crisis head on. This innovative and humane project could inspire other regions to follow suit. The evaluation planned for a year will determine whether this model can be expanded and become a reference in the fight against gambling addiction. A representative of the Ksa says that if the impact of this center is positive, then this service will be made accessible to all of the Netherlands.

Some tips to prevent gambling addiction

Even though Amsterdam is launching a pilot project to help people with gambling addiction, it is always better to take steps to prevent this addiction. For those who want to protect themselves or their loved ones, here are some recommendations:

  1. Limit the time and money spent on gambling: set a budget for gambling, impose strict limits and stick to it.
  2. Use blocking tools: several applications and sites allow you to limit access to online gambling platforms. In the Netherlands, players can obtain a free one-year license on the Gamban application. This application is also available in Belgium.
  3. Register on the exclusion list: In Belgium, the EPIS list allows you to exclude yourself from physical and online casinos. A similar system exists in the Netherlands, it is the Cruks register.
  4. Consult professionals: associations such as SOS Gokken can provide appropriate support.
