Campaign warns young people: Gambling on the European Championships can be dangerous!

Half of Dutch young people are considering betting on sports matches this summer, especially on the European Football Championship. Young men in particular are sensitive to a “bet”, according to research by Loket Kansspel.

Gambling on sports matches is popular among young people

30 percent of 18 to 24 year olds indicate that they will probably gamble on matches in the near futur. While 32% “may” do so. Men are twice as likely to gamble as women.

The popularity of gambling among young people is of great concern. This is because they are a vulnerable target group. Research by the Gaming Authority shows that young adults form the largest group of online gamblers. And they relatively often opt for sports betting. Despite betting lower amounts than older players, young people lose an average of €52 per month per account. Which amounts to more than €600 per year.

More sensitive to addiction

Young people are also more susceptible to gambling addiction. Reports show that young people are losing control more quickly and betting larger amounts than they can afford.

Gambling and knowledge of sports

7 percent of active gamblers believe that by delving into a particular sport they can increase their chances of winning. Experts emphasize that sports results are unpredictable and that gambling always involves a risk.

Gambling commercials normalize gambling

Gambling advertisements which are still allowed online also contribute to the normalization of gambling among young people. This worries experts as these advertisements give young people a distorted view of the risks of gambling.

Loket Kansspel’s “Don’t play games with your money” campaign is aimed at informing young adults about the dangers of online gambling. The campaign highlights the pitfalls of gambling and encourages young people to be aware of their own behavior.
