Prohibited betting options: Kansspelautoriteit reprimands ZEbetting and Betca

The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) was forced to take action against prohibited betting options. Both ZEbetting and Betca were summoned for a reprimand.

This was due to tennis matches. Both providers allowed bets on winning or losing a set, which is against the regulations.

Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) takes strict action in these situations

ZEbetting and Betca are both known in the Netherlands for their sports betting, and it’s precisely this that has caused quite a stir. The Kansspelautoriteit has urged both companies to stop this violation and prevent it from ever happening again. Both parties were required to take the necessary measures to do so.

The Ksa highly values monitoring the availability of betting options. The Kansspelautoriteit emphasizes that providers are obligated to continuously monitor their offerings. Should providers make a mistake by offering prohibited betting options, they must report this to the Ksa on their own initiative. Should a new or repeated violation occur, a provider could not only lose its license but also face a heavy fine.

What prompted the Kansspelautoriteit?

Eliminating the risk of match-fixing is essential for fair sports betting. Deliberately influencing the outcome of a sporting event poses a threat to the fairness of the game, which people primarily watch for entertainment. A football match or a game of darts should proceed without any form of manipulation.

Dutch gambling legislation has clear regulations on this matter, stating that it is prohibited to offer bets on certain matches or specific parts thereof that could be abused.

This primarily concerns events where the outcome is relatively easy to influence, such as winning or losing individual sets in tennis matches. Betting on these is unacceptable.

By preventing betting on such components, the sporting world maintains its integrity and protects not only fans from the negative consequences of match-fixing, but also the players themselves.

Why is tennis targeted as a sport?

  • Tennis is not a team sport but an individual sport, so decisions rest with one player, which drastically increases the risk of match-fixing.
  • The nature of this sport allows for various betting options to arise during the course of the game. Moreover, it’s often difficult to prove that a player is losing intentionally, for example.
  • The risk of match-fixing also increases dramatically if it turns out that matches are not taking place at the highest level and are therefore not broadcast or covered by news reports. This also makes lower levels of play more vulnerable.

This makes the tennis world susceptible to match-fixing and explains why swift action is taken if such situations do arise.

A match outcome should never be the result of manipulation

A sporting event must be able to be followed faithfully by everyone at all times. Whether a player plays well or poorly depends on their form that day and the actual course of the match.

The outcome of a match should never be influenced by manipulation. That sporting event you’ve been looking forward to for so long, for example, should remain a spectacle without certain factors affecting the outcome through cheating.
