From tears on the field to gambling addiction

Fagioli vividly remembers the moment he burst into tears on the pitch against Sassuolo last year. “I made a mistake and caused my team problems”, said the midfielder. “Everything seemed hopeless. But the biggest mistake was myself. Gambling had taken over my life. It was an obsession, a nightmare.”

The boredom during rehabilitation from an injury turned out to be the breeding ground for Fagioli’s gambling addiction. “It started innocently enough, but I quickly lost control”, he admits. “I gambled on illegal websites even on my own team’s matches. I was deeply ashamed.”

Seeking professional help and therapy

The low point came when the police arrived at Fagioli’s home in connection with the gambling scandal. “I called my mother and told her everything,” said the midfielder. “I couldn’t hide it any longer. That’s when I knew I had to get help.”

Fagioli decided to address his problems and started therapy to beat his gambling addiction. The footballer says he is happy because he had the courage to ask for help. “That’s why I want people who have an addiction to know that they don’t have to be afraid. Help is always available if you are open to it.”

Return to the soccer field

Fagioli returns to the football field after a seven-month suspension. He has even been selected for Italy’s European Championship team. He says he is grateful for this opportunity. “I am determined to revive my career and have learned from my mistakes,” said Fagioli.
