Why the 21-year-old age limit?
Belgium, like many European countries, considers that access to gambling should be restricted to individuals who have reached a certain level of maturity. The legal age of majority is 18, but the minimum age for gambling or entering a casino is 21 – three years older. These extra three years allow young adults to better understand the risks associated with gambling and to establish a solid financial foundation. The aim is to prevent addiction and financial ruin.

Are National Lottery games subject to the same restriction?
Since 1 September 2024, the Gambling Act has been tightened, prohibiting access to all forms of gambling for young people under the age of 21, with the exception of National Lottery games. Games such as EuroMillions, the Lotto and scratchcards are still available to those aged 18 and over. However, the minimum age may be raised following changes to the rules governing the National Lottery.
