BAGO welcomes new government agreement
The Belgian Association of Gaming Operators (BAGO) has expressed its support for the new government agreement aimed at stepping up the fight against illegal gambling and improving player protection in Belgium. This agreement responds to BAGO’s regular calls for a safer, more responsible and well-regulated gaming environment.
Three key areas for strengthened regulation
The new government agreement focuses on three fundamental aspects for the gambling sector:
1. Intensified fight against illegal gambling
According to BAGO, illegal gambling is a growing threat, with 60% of major online gambling sites operating outside the legal framework. A recent study revealed that almost half of young men aged 18 to 21 play on illegal platforms, increasing their exposure to financial and psychological risks. BAGO therefore fully supports government initiatives to toughen measures against these fraudulent operators.
“Urgent action is needed to protect vulnerable players, especially those under 21,” says a spokesperson for the association.
2. Modernization of the regulatory framework
One of the major announcements in the agreement concerns the modernization of gambling laws and the reform of the Gambling Commission. By establishing a stronger, more independent regulator, the government intends to guarantee market integrity and offer better protection for players.
“A strong, independent regulator is essential to safeguard players and maintain market integrity,” says BAGO.
This modernization could also include stricter rules on sports sponsorship and advertising, aspects often criticized for their influence on risky behavior.
3. Ensuring legal certainty for operators
The agreement highlights the desire to establish a stable and transparent regulatory framework. This legal certainty is essential for authorized operators, who must be able to operate in a clear and predictable environment. BAGO applauds this move, stressing that a coherent legislative framework will foster a balanced gambling sector, where law-abiding players can operate with confidence.
“Clear and consistent rules will provide certainty for operators, ensuring a fair and well-regulated gaming sector.”
Closer cooperation between BAGO and the government
BAGO is committed to working actively with the authorities to implement these reforms and ensure a responsible, well-regulated gaming market. The association is leveraging its expertise and knowledge of the industry to help implement these new measures.
What is BAGO?
Founded in 2015, BAGO brings together 5 of Belgium’s leading gambling companies: Ardent Group (Gaming1), BetFirst, Golden Palace, Napoleon, and Star Casino. The association aims to defend the interests of its members while ensuring compliance with the legal and ethical standards governing the sector. Its missions include promoting responsible gaming and protecting players from the risks associated with gambling.
One of BAGO’s fundamental principles is to promote responsible gambling. The association implements a number of concrete actions to prevent excessive or problem gambling. This approach includes prevention and education programs, as well as rigorous monitoring of operators’ practices. BAGO also works to ensure that players have access to clear information on the risks involved and the tools available to protect themselves, such as self-exclusion options and limit management.
BAGO is a leader in the development and implementation of best practices. By working closely with the Gaming Commission, BAGO ensures that its members comply with legal requirements while offering secure services to players.
