Betway Casino permanently shut down in Belgium

Since August 26, players have not been able to access the Betway online casino. Anyone who tries to log in is only presented with an information screen.

Betway informed its customers via an email that the casino is ceasing its services in Belgium. Since August 19, it has not been possible to add funds to accounts or place bets.

Betway withdraws from Belgium

“Dear Betway customers.” Unfortunately, we have decided to stop trading in your region. “We will work with you to refund any outstanding balances,” Betway reports.

“If you have an account that you would like to discuss, please contact us at support@betway.be and include your username. Please see our Closure Privacy Notice (Dutch, French), which informs ‘You’ (the data subject) of how we store, protect and delete your data, and who you can contact if you need support or want to exercise your rights.”

Betway message

However, Betway has taken measures to reassure existing customers. Open bets will be fully refunded and players have until August 27 to withdraw funds from their accounts. However, many players are still left with unanswered questions, especially about the future of their accounts and the reason for this closure.

What is the reason for the closure?

Although Betway has not given an official reason for ceasing its activities in Belgium, there is much speculation about possible causes. The Belgian Gaming Commission previously reported that Betway’s online casino achieved record revenues in 2023.

However, Betway was one of the smaller players in the Belgian market. A frequently cited reason for the closure is the upcoming regulation that requires casinos and sports betting to be completely separate. This new legislation comes into effect on September 1, 2024 and may have been a factor in Betway’s decision to withdraw.
