ChatGPT says no to gambling adverts

For the time being, companies in the gambling sector cannot run adverts on ChatGPT. OpenAI’s advertising rules classify conversations relating to gambling as contexts in which no adverts should appear.

Gambling operators excluded from the advertising programme

The introduction of advertising on ChatGPT will not benefit all advertisers. According to information published by CasinoNieuws.nl, companies active in the gambling sector are not currently included amongst the advertisers accepted by OpenAI.

This restriction comes as ChatGPT’s advertising platform has just been extended to several European countries, including the Netherlands. Interested companies have been able to submit an application since 24 August. OpenAI then reviews their business to determine whether they meet the conditions imposed on advertisers.

For companies in the gambling sector, the answer is currently ‘no’. They are therefore unable to create advertising campaigns on ChatGPT.

Sensitive conversations are also protected

The restriction does not apply solely to certain categories of advertisers. The rules referred to by the source also stipulate that no advertising should appear during interactions deemed to be sensitive.

This is particularly the case when a user raises issues concerning their mental health or personal well-being.

The rationale put forward by OpenAI is therefore to keep advertising away from certain topics or situations deemed incompatible with its display in ChatGPT.

Is this ban permanent?

Not necessarily.

The email cited by CasinoNieuws.nl explicitly leaves open the possibility of a change. OpenAI states that the eligibility criteria could be broadened in the future and invites the companies concerned to check for any updates at a later date.
