Huge growth for online gambling in Denmark

In Denmark, online casinos are still doing well. While other parts of the gambling market are underperforming. In August, €76.6 million was earned, which is an increase of 4.3% compared to the same period last year. This is according to figures from the Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden.

Online casinos continue to win

The growth is mainly due to the strong performance of online casinos. In August, they saw their income increase by 20.8%, to €40 million. That is a nice jump compared to July, when the income was €38 million. They are also close to the monthly record of €41 million, which was reached in March of this year.

It is clear that online casinos are the backbone of the Danish gambling market, especially now that other segments are struggling.

Sports betting and land-based casinos lag behind

While online casinos continue to grow, sports betting is doing a lot less well. In August, revenue from sports betting fell by 14% to €19 million. This is also slightly lower than the revenue from July.

The same applies to physical casinos and slot machines. Although revenue from slot machines rose by 0.2% to €12 million, this segment remains vulnerable. Physical casinos even saw their revenue fall by 12% to 3.8 million, which is the same as the July figures.

More registrations for self-exclusion program

In addition to the revenue statistics, Spillemyndigheden came up with a striking update: the number of registrations for the Danish self-exclusion program, ROFUS, has grown considerably. At the end of August, 51,893 people were registered. This is an increase of 12.4% compared to the same period last year. Of the registered, 77.3% are men and 22.7% are women. No less than 66.6% of them have permanently excluded themselves from gambling.

In addition, the supervisor shared information about the StopSpillet helpline. What is striking is that young people between the ages of 18 and 25 most often ask for help. Since the start of the service in 2019, there have been almost 3,200 requests for help, 37% of which come from this age group.
