Odds error, cancelled live bet and palpable error: what can the bookmaker do?

Has your bookmaker cancelled a winning bet by claiming there was an “odds error” or a delay in live betting? Find out exactly what the law says and when a ticket can legally be cancelled.

You spot unusually high odds, place your bet and receive confirmation from your bookmaker. A few hours later, your ticket is suddenly cancelled. In another situation, you bet live just before a goal, but the bet then disappears from your history or is simply refunded.

Is the bookmaker allowed to cancel a bet it had officially accepted?

The answer is yes, but only under very strict conditions. Operators’ rules generally include clauses covering obvious pricing errors, bets recorded when the outcome was already known and technical glitches. To understand how these cancellations affect your winnings or the overall odds of your tickets, you can also consult our complete guide to void bets and settlement rules.

Here is a quick overview of the bookmaker’s rights in each situation:

Situation Bookmaker’s right Impact on the bet
Obvious odds error, e.g. favourite at 12.00 instead of 1.20 Void or recalculate The bookmaker may cancel the bet or apply the correct market odds if the error is obvious.
Normal odds movement, e.g. odds move from 2.20 to 1.80 No right to cancel The accepted bet remains fully valid at the original odds.
Live bet accepted AFTER a goal/card due to TV delay Void Treated as a late bet. As the outcome was already known, the stake is refunded.
Market left open because of a technical bug Void If the market should have been suspended, the ticket is neutralised and the odds are reduced to 1.00.

What is a “palpable error” in the odds?

The difference between generous odds and an obvious error

Bookmakers adjust their prices based on their own analysis and margins. One operator may offer odds of 2.20 while the rest of the market is at 2.00. That is perfectly normal.

A palpable error is a glaring anomaly, either caused by a technical issue or human mistake, that is clearly obvious.

Typical examples recognised in bookmakers’ rules include:

  • Reversed odds: The match favourite is shown at 8.00 and the outsider at 1.15.
  • Decimal error: Normal odds of 1.40 are accidentally displayed as 14.00.
  • Reversed handicap: A +1.5 handicap is assigned to the wrong team.
  • Market left open: Pre-match odds remain available even though the event has already been underway for 20 minutes.

Can the bookmaker change the odds after acceptance?

If the error qualifies as “palpable”, the bookmaker’s rules generally allow two options:

  1. Cancel the bet entirely, refunding the stake or reducing the odds to 1.00.
  1. Settle it at corrected odds by adjusting the bet to the true average market price at the time the wager was placed.

Why are live bets often cancelled?

Live betting relies on real-time data transmission. Technology inevitably creates delays, which can sometimes lead to disputes.

The TV/streaming delay trap

Television broadcasts and online streams are almost always 5 to 15 seconds behind the real action on the field. The bookmaker’s system receives data from the stadium faster than you see the images on your screen.

If you see a dangerous attack and bet on a goal when the ball has in fact already crossed the line, your wager is treated as a late bet. The bookmaker is entitled to cancel it because the outcome was technically already known when the server recorded the ticket.

The role of the acceptance delay

When you click “Bet” during live betting, you will often notice a timer of 3 to 8 seconds. This safety delay allows the bookmaker to stop the wager from being accepted if a major event, such as a goal, penalty, red card or VAR decision, occurs while the bet is being processed.

Markets not suspended because of a technical error

Sometimes a bookmaker’s system glitches and fails to suspend betting when a penalty is awarded or a VAR review is taking place. Even if your ticket shows the status “Accepted”, the operator may apply its late-suspension clause and cancel bets recorded during that interval.

Odds errors and cancellations in accumulators

What happens to my accumulator if one match contains an odds error?

If one selection in your accumulator is voided because of a palpable error or a late bet:

  • The affected selection is reduced to odds of 1.00 and treated as void.
  • The rest of your accumulator remains fully active.

Example calculation:

  • Selection 1 (1.80) × Selection 2 with error (3.50) × Selection 3 (1.50) = Initial odds of 9.45.
  • After Selection 2 is voided: 1.80 × 1.00 × 1.50 = New total odds of 2.70.

What if the accumulator was losing?

Rules on palpable errors and late bets apply regardless of the result. If a late bet was losing, the bookmaker should in theory void and refund it in the same way as if it had been winning.

How can you challenge an unfair cancellation by your bookmaker?

A bookmaker cannot cancel a legitimate bet simply because it lost money or misjudged an event. If you believe your ticket was cancelled without proper justification, here is what to do:

1. Gather all chronological evidence

Make sure you keep:

  • The exact bet ticket ID.
  • The precise time, down to the second, when the bet was accepted.
  • The official timestamp of the sporting event, such as the minute of the goal or card.
  • Screenshots of your account history.

2. Contact customer support with the right questions

Do not simply say “Give me my winnings back”. Ask precise technical questions that require support to justify its decision:

  1. “Can you tell me the exact clause in your Terms and Conditions that was applied to cancel this ticket?”
  1. “What was the exact time my bet was recorded on your servers, and what was the official time of the event you are relying on?”

3. Contact the regulator

If the bookmaker refuses to justify the cancellation or applies an unfair clause when the odds were merely generous rather than clearly wrong, you can submit your full case to the gambling regulator in your country, such as the Belgian Gaming Commission in Belgium.

Can a bookmaker cancel a bet after kick-off?

Yes, if it can demonstrate that there was a palpable pricing error, a technical malfunction or that the bet was recorded after the relevant outcome had already occurred, making it a late bet.

Are odds that are higher than all competitors automatically a palpable error?

No. A normal pricing difference or very aggressive odds are part of competition between operators. There must be an obvious inconsistency, such as a favourite priced at 15.00, for the error to qualify as palpable.

Why was my live bet cancelled even though it was marked “Won”?

If the system later detects that the wager was accepted a few seconds after a goal or other decisive event, the bet can be corrected afterwards and declared void.

Does the time I click the button count as the official time?

No. What matters is the timestamp of the final confirmation on the bookmaker’s server, including the processing delay applied to live bets.
