Match cancelled, postponed or interrupted: what happens to your sports bet?
Are you wondering what happens to your bet if a match is cancelled, postponed or interrupted? Find out exactly when your stake is refunded and how your tickets are settled.
You have placed a bet on a football match scheduled for 8:45 p.m., but a few hours before kick-off, the fixture is postponed. Elsewhere, a tennis match starts as normal before being interrupted by rain. In a third case, a basketball game is stopped permanently after an incident in the arena.
For the bettor, the question is always the same: what happens to my stake?
There is no single answer. An event cancelled before it starts, a match postponed to another date and a fixture interrupted after it has begun are not necessarily treated in the same way.
Settlement mainly depends on four factors: the sport, the market you bet on, the timing of the interruption and the bookmaker’s specific rules. To understand all refund mechanisms, such as odds being reduced to 1.00 or dead heat situations, you can also consult our complete guide to void bets and settlement rules.
Here is a quick overview before looking at the details case by case:
| Undecided market | Market already decided | Impact on an accumulator | |
| Match cancelled | Bet void / Refunded | Bet void / Refunded | Odds reduced to 1.00 |
| Match postponed (< 24h/48h) | Bet remains valid, depending on the bookmaker | Bet remains valid | Selection remains active |
| Match postponed beyond the permitted time window | Bet void / Refunded | Bet void / Refunded | Odds reduced to 1.00 |
| Match interrupted | Bet void / Refunded | Bet settled as a win or loss | Odds reduced to 1.00 for the undecided selection |
What is the difference between a cancelled, postponed and interrupted match?
These three situations are often grouped under the generic term “cancelled match”, even though they can have very different consequences:
- A cancelled match is a fixture that will not take place under the originally scheduled conditions. The bookmaker voids the bets if the event is not rescheduled.
- A postponed match is still expected to take place, but at a different time or date. Depending on the operator, your bet may remain valid within a specified time window, often 24 to 48 hours.
- An interrupted match has actually started but does not reach its conclusion because of bad weather, a lighting failure, crowd trouble or another incident. This is the most complex situation because some markets may already have been decided when play stops.
What happens to your bet before kick-off?
Cancelled or rescheduled match
When a fixture never starts, bets are generally either kept open while waiting for a new date or declared void.
Example: You stake €25 on Team A to win at odds of 2.00. The match is cancelled. If the rules provide for the bet to be voided, your €25 stake is refunded in full. You neither win nor lose anything.
Postponed match: automatic refund?
No. This is one of the main sources of confusion. When a match is postponed, some bookmakers keep the bet open for a specified period. If the fixture is played within that window, the ticket remains valid. If the new date falls outside that period, unsettled bets are voided.
Kick-off delayed by a few hours
A simple delay is generally not treated as a cancellation. A match scheduled for 6 p.m. that starts at 8 p.m. on the same day remains the same event, and bets stay fully active.
What happens if the match is interrupted after it has started?
When a fixture is stopped during play, settlement becomes more nuanced. Everything depends on whether your market had already been definitively decided.
The rule for a market that has already been decided
If the outcome of your bet could no longer have been changed by the remainder of the match, the bet is settled:
- First goalscorer: If your player scored in the 20th minute and the match is interrupted in the 70th, the bet remains a winner.
- Over 0.5 goals: If a goal was scored before play stopped, the threshold has already been reached, so the bet is a winner.
The rule for an undecided market
If you bet on “Over 3.5 goals” and there are only 3 goals when the match is interrupted in the 70th minute, the final outcome of the market was not yet known. The bet will therefore be voided and refunded if the match is not resumed within the permitted time window.
How are accumulators and Bet Builders handled?
A void selection in an accumulator
In a standard accumulator, a void selection is reduced to odds of 1.00 and effectively neutralised. The accumulator remains active with the remaining selections.
Example calculation:
- Original bet: Team A (1.80) × Team B (2.00) × Team C (1.50) = Total odds of 5.40.
- If Team C is voided: 1.80 × 2.00 × 1.00 = New odds of 3.60.
If every match in the accumulator is voided, the total odds become 1.00 and the full real-money stake is refunded.
The specific case of a Bet Builder
Bet Builders combine several selections from the same match. If the fixture is cancelled, the entire Bet Builder is generally voided. If only one condition is affected, some bookmakers void the whole ticket while others recalculate the odds. Check the specific terms and conditions for this product with your operator.
What happens to a void free bet?
A free bet is not always refunded in cash. Depending on the promotion, the bookmaker may credit you with an equivalent free bet token again or may consider the bonus expired.
Sport-specific settlement rules
Football
Football is a good example of how settlement differs by market. If a match is permanently interrupted:
- Settled: First goalscorer, first team to score, over/under markets where the threshold has already been reached, cards or corners already recorded.
- Voided: 1X2 match result, correct score, second-half markets, over/under markets where the threshold has not yet been reached.
Tennis
In tennis, a rain delay can postpone a match by several hours or even days without cancelling it.
Player retirement: This is one of the most delicate situations. Depending on the bookmaker, a certain number of sets may need to have been completed for a “Match Winner” bet to remain valid. However, a “First Set Winner” bet remains a winner if the first set had already been completed before the retirement.
American sports: basketball, baseball and American football
These sports often apply a minimum playing-time rule. If the game is interrupted after that threshold has been reached, for example 55 minutes in American football or 5/9 innings in baseball, the result may be made official by the league, which directly affects bookmaker settlement.
Best practices and what to do in case of a dispute
Why do rules differ between bookmakers?
Each bookmaker sets its own Terms and Conditions. One operator may set the postponement limit at 36 hours, while another may use 48 hours. Your bet is strictly subject to the rules of the site on which you placed it.
What should you do if your bet remains pending?
- Check the details of your ticket: Verify the exact market and its status, such as “Pending” or “Suspended”.
- Wait during the permitted settlement window: The bookmaker may be waiting for an official decision from the league or federation.
- Contact support with a precise request: Avoid simply demanding the potential winnings. Ask a specific question, for example: “Hello, my bet [ticket number] on the match [X vs Y] is still pending following the interruption. Could you please tell me which clause of your Terms and Conditions is being applied to this market?”
Does a match postponed until the following day automatically void my bet?
Not necessarily. If the fixture takes place within the time limit set by the bookmaker, often 24 to 48 hours, the bet remains valid.
Do I get my stake back if a match never started?
Yes. If the match is permanently cancelled or takes place outside the permitted postponement window, the stake on a single bet is refunded in full to your balance.
Can I claim potential winnings if the cancelled match was already effectively won?
No. If the market was not mathematically settled before the interruption and is declared void, the rule applies strictly: your stake is refunded, but no potential winnings are paid.
