NOS news hacked: fake videos lure players with illegal gambling sites and jackpots

Reading time: 2 minutes News broadcasts with NOS presenters Malou Petter and Jeroen Tjepkema circulate on social media. The videos, which are difficult to distinguish from real NOS broadcasts, also known as Deepfake videos, advertise illegal gambling sites No Limit Bet and ZumoSpin Casino.
The fake videos are sponsored by a hacked account of an Austrian medical nonprofit. In the videos, famous Youtuber “MrBeast” and a Dutch couple claim to win huge jackpots on the illegal gambling sites.
Deepfake videos featuring famous Dutch people promote illegal gambling sites
After clicking a button in the videos, users are redirected to illegal gambling sites. These sites operate without a license from the Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) and are therefore illegal in the Netherlands. Casino Scout, a Dutch review website, discovered the banned advertising.
This is not the first time that illegal gambling companies have used deepfake videos to lure Dutch consumers. In October 2023, fake videos with NOS and Omroep Brabant fragments were distributed, and in the same month Virgil van Dijk was used in a deepfake video to promote an illegal gambling app.
Kevin De Bruyne also victim of deep fake
Another example of Deepfake is a video in which top soccerplayer Kevin De Bruyne appeared to promote (online) gambling last year. However, this was not an authentic advertisement with Kevin De Bruyne himself, but also a deepfake video, generated with so-called artificial intelligence (AI). In this video, the Belgian footballer claimed that he likes online casino games and that he won a jackpot of 100,000 euros.
The Dutch Gaming Authority warns consumers about the dangers of illegal gambling sites. These sites do not offer any protection to players and can lead to addiction and financial problems.
