Football legend Samuel Eto’o receives a hefty fine for promoting an online casino

Reading time: 1 minute Samuel Eto’o, one of the most respected African footballers ever, has been fined by the Confédération Africaine de Football for his ambassadorship of online casino 1xBet. The fine is €184,596.
CAF launched an investigation into Eto’o’s behavior last August after complaints from various parties in the Cameroonian football world. The disciplinary committee ruled that Eto’o seriously violated the principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship. Eto’o’s lawyers have announced they will appeal this decision.

Samuel Eto’o Escapes Match Fixing charges
Although Eto’o was found guilty of an ethics breach, the former Barcelona star was acquitted of match fixing. The disciplinary committee ruled that “there is insufficient evidence at this time.”
Dissatisfaction about the administration
CAF’s ruling is not expected to allay discontent in Cameroon over Eto’o’s leadership of football. Earlier this week, executives including former members of Fecafoot and the president of the professional football association urged the presidents of CAF and FIFA to speed up their investigations. They pointed out possible sanctions, including a lifelong ban.
