How to dispute the settlement of a sports bet in Belgium: step-by-step guide

Was your bet wrongly settled as a loss, were the odds changed or were your winnings recalculated? Discover the official procedure in Belgium for disputing a bet and asserting your rights.

Was your bet declared a loser even though you thought you had won? Was a selection voided without a clear explanation? Did your bookmaker apply a dead heat rule, cancel a live bet or invoke an “odds error” after the bet had been accepted?

In Belgium, effectively disputing a bet does not simply involve writing to customer support to say that the result seems unfair. You need to reconstruct the chronology of the bet, identify the exact rule that was applied, gather technical evidence and follow the official complaint channels.

Since 1 June 2024, Belgian legislation has entrusted the Consumer Mediation Service with handling disputes relating to gambling. To understand the basic rules concerning void tickets or odds being reduced to 1.00, you can also consult our complete guide to void bets and settlement rules.

Here is the procedure to follow to assert your rights with a licensed operator.

Summary of the dispute procedure in Belgium

  • Phase 1: Diagnosis & evidence
    • Action: Check the actual reason for the settlement, such as void, dead heat or extra time, and save visual evidence of the ticket.
    • Responsible party: Bettor
  • Phase 2: Regulatory analysis
    • Action: Consult the sport-specific Terms and Conditions and recalculate the theoretical payout before submitting any complaint.
    • Responsible party: Bettor
  • Phase 3: Written complaint
    • Action: Send a reasoned request to the bookmaker’s customer support, citing the ticket ID and the relevant provisions of the Terms and Conditions.
    • Responsible party: Customer Service (F1+ licence)
  • Phase 4: Official mediation
    • Action: Submit a free case to the Consumer Mediation Service (CMS) if the complaint is rejected.
    • Responsible party: Mediation Service / Belgian Gaming Commission

Phase 1: Do not rely solely on the displayed result

Before assuming that an injustice has occurred, you should carefully analyse the settlement of your bet. A ticket that appears to be a winner may be affected by a range of specific rules: a selection declared void, with its odds reduced to 1.00; the application of a dead heat rule in the event of a tie; a player treated as a non-starter; or a result settled only at the end of regulation time, excluding extra time.

Sometimes, it may simply be a late correction made by the league’s official statistics provider. The first golden rule is therefore not to immediately demand a refund, but to request a factual explanation of how the ticket was settled.

To support your case, immediately gather all the technical details relating to your bet. Note the unique ticket ID, the stake, the accepted odds, the exact name of the market and its final status. The precise timestamp, down to the second, can be crucial for live betting in order to establish that your wager was accepted before a decisive event occurred.

Do not rely on the bookmaker to retain your data indefinitely. Immediately take clear screenshots of your ticket, the market description, the official score and your account history. The Terms and Conditions of Belgian operators often state that their computer records are authoritative, so your screenshots may be your strongest evidence if there is a disagreement over timestamps.

Phase 2: Check the applicable rules and redo the calculations

In Belgium, every operator holding an F1+ licence is legally required to provide its rules to the Belgian Gaming Commission. Take the time to search the website’s Terms and Conditions for the section specific to the sport concerned, the In-Play rules for live betting or the provisions relating to Bet Builders.

You should also make sure that you are checking the version of the rules that was in force at the exact time you placed your bet.

It is equally important to redo the theoretical calculations yourself to determine whether there is a genuine dispute over the settlement or simply a misunderstanding of the payout.

In an accumulator where one selection is voided, the odds for that event are reduced to 1.00. A three-selection accumulator at 2.00 × 1.80 × 1.50 that would have returned €108 from a €20 stake will instead return €72 if the final match is voided: 2.00 × 1.80 × 1.00.

This recalculation is entirely legitimate and does not constitute an error by the operator.

Similarly, in the event of a dead heat, where two participants finish tied, your original stake is divided by two before being multiplied by the odds, logically reducing the final payout.

Phase 3: Submit a formal complaint to the bookmaker

Always use a written channel, such as email or the operator’s complaint form, so that you retain dated evidence of your exchanges.

Avoid impulsive messages and submit a factual request including the reference of your ticket, the date, time and odds. Explicitly ask customer support to provide the exact provision of its Terms and Conditions used to justify the settlement, as well as the official timestamp relied upon by its data provider.

Sample dispute message to copy and paste

Hello,

I would like to dispute the settlement of bet no. [Ticket number], placed on [Date] at [Exact time], for a stake of €[Amount] at odds of [Odds].

The market concerned is: [Exact market name]. The ticket was settled as [Lost / Void / Dead Heat], for a return of €[Amount credited].

I dispute this settlement for the following reason: [Short factual explanation].

Could you please provide me in writing with:

  • The exact provision of your rules and Terms and Conditions, including the article number, applied to this bet;
  • The exact timestamp at which the ticket was accepted and the data provider relied upon;
  • A detailed calculation of the settlement.

I look forward to receiving a reasoned response.

Phase 4: Official avenues of recourse in Belgium

If the bookmaker’s customer service refuses to revise its position or fails to respond within a reasonable period, you can use the official out-of-court procedure provided for under Belgian law.

Since 1 June 2024, the law has explicitly assigned the Consumer Mediation Service (CMS) responsibility for receiving and handling consumer disputes relating to gambling.

The procedure is completely free for the player. The only prerequisite is that you must be able to prove that you have already attempted to resolve the dispute directly with the bookmaker in writing.

The CMS examines the case and seeks an amicable solution, generally within 90 days.

A common misunderstanding regarding the Belgian Gaming Commission should also be clarified. It is no longer necessary to send your commercial complaint directly to the Commission in order to obtain payment of a betting ticket.

The Consumer Mediation Service is now responsible for forwarding the case to the Belgian Gaming Commission if the dispute reveals a possible breach of gambling legislation or the conditions attached to an F1+ licence.

If mediation is unsuccessful, the mediator’s recommendation is not binding. You therefore retain the option of bringing the case before the Belgian courts. However, for modest amounts, free mediation remains the most appropriate and quickest solution.

Consumer Mediation Service contact details

Who should I contact first in the event of a betting dispute in Belgium?

You must first contact the bookmaker’s customer service in writing. Proof that you have taken this preliminary step is required before a case can be opened with the Consumer Mediation Service.

Do I have to pay to use the Consumer Mediation Service?

No. The procedure is completely free for consumers residing in Belgium or betting on a licensed Belgian website.

Can the Belgian Gaming Commission compensate me?

No. The Belgian Gaming Commission’s role is to supervise licences and ensure compliance with gambling legislation. It does not intervene to order payment of an individual win; that role now falls within the Consumer Mediation Service procedure.

Can I dispute a bet placed on a website that is not licensed in Belgium?

Belgian legal protection and access to the Consumer Mediation Service apply only to legal operators holding an F1+ licence issued by the Belgian Gaming Commission. On an illegal website, avenues of recourse are extremely limited.
