Accumulator, system bet and Bet Builder: what’s the difference?

An accumulator, a system bet and a Bet Builder all combine multiple selections, but they don’t work in the same way. In particular, the consequences of a single incorrect selection differ significantly. We’ll explain how each type of bet works and the risks involved, using clear examples.

What is a combination bet?

With a combination bet, you combine different selections on a single betting slip. These selections can come from multiple matches and sports. For example, you could combine a football match, a tennis match and a cycling race.

All predictions must be correct for the bet to win. As soon as one selection loses, the entire combination bet is normally lost. On the other hand, the odds of all the selected predictions are multiplied together.

Suppose you combine three predictions:

Prediction Odds
Club Brugge wins 1,80
Anderlecht wins 1,70
Belgian tennis player wins 2,00

The total odds are:

1.80 × 1.70 × 2.00 = 6.12

With a stake of 10 euros, the potential payout is 61.20 euros. Of this, 51.20 euros is net profit. If any one of the three predictions loses, you receive nothing.

If you’re still new to this, you can start by consulting our general guide to sports betting in Belgium

Why are accumulator bets popular?

Accumulator bets are attractive because you can achieve high overall odds with a relatively small stake. The downside is that every additional selection reduces the chance of the entire bet slip winning.

Five predictions, each with reasonably good chances of winning, can still add up to a risky bet. A strikingly high potential payout usually means the chance of winning is small.

Some bookmakers offer extra features relating to combinations. In our review of Starsport, for example, you can read more about combination bets, odds and partial cash-outs.

What is a system bet?

A system bet spreads your predictions across several smaller combinations. This means that a single incorrect prediction can sometimes be compensated for. You therefore do not always have to predict all selections correctly to still receive a payout.

With a 2-out-of-3 system, you choose three predictions. The bookmaker turns these into three separate double bets:

  • Prediction A and B
  • Prediction A and C
  • Prediction B and C

Using the odds given earlier, this results in the following combinations:

Combination Calculation Odds
A + B 1,80 × 1,70 3,06
A + C 1,80 × 2,00 3,60
B + C 1,70 × 2,00 3,40

If you stake 2 euros per combination, your total stake is 6 euros. If prediction C loses, the combination A + B remains. In this example, that pays out 6.12 euros. So you do get some money back, but that doesn’t automatically mean you make a profit.

What systems are available?

Bookmakers may offer various systems. Common variants include 2 out of 3, 3 out of 4 and 4 out of 5. The first number indicates how many selections are used per combination. The second number shows the total number of selections you have chosen.

In a ‘3 out of 4’ system, four separate treble bets are placed. In a ‘2 out of 4’ system, six double combinations are created. The more combinations the system contains, the higher the total stake when you use the same amount per combination.

You should therefore always check whether the stake amount applies to the entire system or to each individual combination. The exact mechanics may vary from one bookmaker to another. You can compare the options on offer via our reviews of Betcenter Belgium and Bwin, amongst others.

What is a Bet Builder?

With a Bet Builder, you combine different predictions within a single match. Instead of simply betting on the winner, you build a personalised bet comprising multiple elements.

For a match between Club Brugge and Anderlecht, for example, you could combine the following:

  • Club Brugge wins
  • Over 2.5 goals are scored
  • Both teams score

The bookmaker combines these selections and displays a single combined odds figure. All selections must be correct. If Club Brugge win 2–0, then the win and the number of goals are correct, but not both teams have scored. The entire Bet Builder bet is then lost.

A Bet Builder is similar to a combination bet, but the key difference is that the predictions usually relate to the same match. As these outcomes can influence one another, the odds are not always simply multiplied together. The bookmaker calculates a single adjusted odds figure for the entire combination.

Comparison of combination, system and Bet Builder bets

Feature Combination bet System bet Bet Builder
Number of predictions Multiple Multiple Multiple
Matches Often different Often different Usually the same match
All predictions must be correct Yes Not always Yes
Consists of multiple bets No Yes No
Total stake One stake Stake per combination One stake
One incorrect prediction results in an immediate loss Yes Not necessarily Yes
Odds Are multiplied Calculated per combination Combined by the bookmaker

A system bet offers more variety, but can be more expensive due to the number of combinations. A combination bet and Bet Builder are simpler, but just one incorrect selection is enough to lose the entire stake.

What happens if a match is cancelled?

If a match is cancelled or a selection is declared void, many bookmakers will assign odds of 1.00 to that selection. The remaining selections will then remain active. In the case of a single bet, the stake is usually refunded.

The exact procedure varies by bookmaker and by sport. You should therefore always read the terms and conditions before confirming a combination bet. You can compare the terms and options in our Ladbrokes Belgium review, amongst other places.

Which bet is the least risky?

None of these bets is risk-free. A system bet can accommodate one or more incorrect selections, but consists of several separate stakes. As a result, your total stake may increase without you realising it.

A combination bet with two selections is generally easier to manage than one with eight matches. With a Bet Builder too, the risk increases as you add more conditions.

Pay particular attention to the total stake and not just the potential winnings. In Belgium, there are protective measures in place for online gambling accounts. You should therefore also read up on how the Belgian deposit limits work.

Only bet with a licensed bookmaker

Before placing a bet, check whether the provider holds a valid Belgian licence. You can find information about the various licences on the official website of the Belgian Gaming Commission.

A licence does not make betting any less risky, but it does ensure supervision, mandatory player protection and channels for reporting problems. Always set a budget in advance and never try to recoup a lost accumulator bet straight away by placing a larger stake.

Do you find that betting no longer feels like a relaxing pastime, or that you’re taking ever-greater risks? If so, be sure to recognise the signs of problem gambling in good time.

What is the main difference between a combination bet and a system bet?

With a combination bet, all selections must be correct. A system bet consists of several smaller combinations, which means that a single incorrect selection can sometimes still be covered.

Is a Bet Builder the same as a combination bet?

Not quite. A combination bet usually includes selections from different matches. A Bet Builder combines multiple outcomes within the same match.

Can you still lose with a system bet if just one prediction is wrong?

Yes. You may still receive a payout, but it may be lower than your total stake. This depends on the system chosen, the odds and the amount per combination.

Why is a system bet more expensive?

The stake is split across several separate combinations. A stake of 2 euros across six combinations costs a total of 12 euros.

Can I combine a Bet Builder with other matches?

That varies from bookmaker to bookmaker. Some bookmakers allow a complete Bet Builder to be added as a single selection to a larger accumulator bet. Always check the terms and conditions beforehand.
