Kansspelautoriteit fines illegal gambling sites 1.2 million euros

The Kansspelautoriteit in the Netherlands has imposed a hefty fine on Techno Offshore Limited. So the organisation announced on its site today.

The company was given a monetary penalty of 1.2 million euros. The reason? They offered online gambling in the Netherlands via the websites nolimitbet.com and simplecasino.com without having a licence to do so.

This is prohibited. In the Netherlands, you can only gamble online with parties that have an official licence. So without that licence, you are not allowed to offer anything to Dutch players.

Dutch players could simply sign up

According to the Gaming Authority, the company hardly took any steps to keep Dutch players out. Players could easily sign up without having their age checked. Also notable: features such as autoplay and turboplay were just available.

‘Techno Offshore Limited offered games of chance without a licence.’

Those features can trigger risky gambling behaviour. They make it difficult to stop in time. According to experts, this brings additional dangers, especially for people prone to addiction.

No control, no limits, but crypto

According to Ksa director Michel Groothuizen, a lot is regulated at legal providers to protect players. Think mandatory age checks, betting limits and visibility of playing behaviour. At these illegal sites, all that was absent.

Groothuizen says such parties are actually dangerous.

‘They don’t take risks into account,’ he explains. ‘They let people pay with crypto and offer no limits.’

The Kansspelautoriteit wants to crack down on such sites.

‘We are intervening because these platforms lure people to an offer where they are totally unprotected.’
