Majority of Dutch people gamble: Ipsos research

A recent study by Ipsos I&O Research shows that 65% of Dutch people aged 16 or older have participated in gambling in the past twelve months. This is a significant increase compared to the 2021 survey in which 55 percent of Dutch people participated in some sort of gambling.

Lotteries and scratch cards are the most popular

The most popular forms of gambling are lotteries and scratch cards. Nearly two-thirds of Dutch people, 55%, played lotteries, while 21 percent played scratch cards. Physical bingo slot machines and casino games at a physical location follow in the ranking.

Online gambling: 10% of Dutch people

One in ten Dutch people, 10%, have participated in online gambling in the past year. This is a lower percentage than in the 2021 survey when 12% of Dutch people gambled online. The share of online gamblers who do not have their own account to gamble online is 33%. The majority of online gamblers 62% gambled online only a few times in the past year.

Risky gambling behavior

The research also shows that there is risky gambling behavior. Almost 3% of Dutch people are moderate risk gamblers and a smaller group of 2 percent falls into the ‘high risk’ category. The percentage of high-risk gamblers is higher among young adult players and players with a non-Western migration background.

Sports betting: Most popular gambling online

Most players gamble for relatively small amounts on the internet. In the last thirty days before the survey, 38% lost less than €20 gambling online. Nearly one in five players (19%) lost €100 or more gambling online. Most players opted for online sports betting, 4% of Dutch people aged 16 years and older had gambled with an online bookmaker in the past twelve months.
