Twitter ignores gambling rules: illegal online casinos advertise extensively
Dutch and Belgian users of X (formerly Twitter) are increasingly confronted with illegal advertisements from unlicensed online casinos. These gambling sites are not actually allowed to serve players from these countries, but they are still very present on the platform.
Twitter hides behind the idea that users should report these gambling operators themselves, but what makes the situation special is that these are paid advertisements.
Illegal advertisements put players at risk
The remarkable thing is that these are not just random messages, but purchased sponsored advertisements. This means that Twitter – or actually X – does not seem to exercise any control over the geographical location where these advertisements are shown.
As a result, users in the Netherlands and Belgium come into contact with gambling sites that do not have a license and are therefore not supervised. This is risky for players, who would be better off with licensed providers, where their safety is guaranteed.
No response from X after questions about policy
When our editors asked X for a response, it remained silent. This is not the first time that the platform’s ads have been criticized. Critical voices have previously expressed their concerns about this type of uncontrolled gambling advertising.
In addition to these illegal gambling ads, X users are also regularly confronted with pornographic material. This type of content does not appear to be censored by the platform, which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk. Under his leadership, the rules on the platform have apparently become more relaxed.
