Using a Belgian online casino abroad? These are the risks
You have an account with a legal Belgian online casino and are travelling for a few days to the Netherlands, France, Spain or a destination outside Europe. Can you simply continue playing there? The short answer is usually: no, not necessarily. Having a Belgian player account and a Belgian home address does not automatically mean you can access the casino from any country. Your physical location at the time you play also matters.
Belgian online casinos operate under national licences, location rules and IP address checks. As a result, the website may still open abroad while logging in, depositing money or playing is blocked. The system may also request additional verification. The exact outcome varies by operator and country, but using a VPN to bypass the restriction is not a safe solution.
A Belgian licence does not automatically apply abroad
An A+ or B+ licence issued by the Belgian Gaming Commission allows an operator to offer online gambling within the Belgian legal framework. That licence is not a European passport that automatically allows the casino to offer the same games in every other country. Each country can impose its own requirements regarding online gambling, licensing, player protection and advertising.
That is why you need to distinguish between two sets of rules. First, there are the terms and conditions of the Belgian casino where you have an account. Second, there are the gambling laws of the country where you are physically located. A casino may block a Belgian player abroad because its Belgian licence is not sufficient there, because the country being visited restricts participation, or because the game provider excludes certain countries.
Your nationality is not the same as your location
Casinos do not only look at your nationality, home address or the country where your account was opened. When you use the website or app, the operator can also see technical information about your connection. Your IP address gives an indication of the country and sometimes the region from which you are connecting.
A Belgian logging in from a hotel in Madrid may therefore be identified as a user in Spain. Conversely, a Dutch person staying in Belgium may have a Belgian IP address, but that does not automatically mean they meet all registration requirements. Age, identity, residence, payment details, EPIS checks and the general terms and conditions remain separate checks.
Why do Belgian casinos use geoblocking?
Geoblocking is a technical measure that restricts access to a website, app or specific feature based on the user’s presumed location. A casino may completely block foreign IP addresses, but it may also choose only to prevent bets from being placed. In some cases, you may still be able to browse the website or contact customer support.
This restriction does not only protect the operator. It also prevents a player from participating from a territory where the casino is not authorised to offer gambling services. Being able to visit a casino website therefore does not automatically mean you are allowed to gamble there with real money. This distinction is particularly relevant for international brands operating in different countries under separate domains and licences.
Not every Belgian casino applies exactly the same access rules
The general rule is to check your casino’s terms and conditions and help section before travelling. Policies may differ between operators and can change when licences, country lists or technical systems are updated. You should therefore not rely on an experience from several months ago or on someone telling you they were able to log in while on holiday.
One specific example is Napoleon. Its official help page on playing from abroad states that connecting from outside Belgium is not permitted and that the system only accepts Belgian IP addresses. This is the published policy of this particular operator and does not prove that every other Belgian casino works in exactly the same way. It does, however, show why you should check with your own provider in advance.
There is no unrestricted right to online gambling within the European Union
Some players assume that a casino must be accessible everywhere within the European Union. However, European rules aimed at preventing unjustified geoblocking for many goods and services do not create a general right to cross-border gambling. Because of their specific legal status, gambling services are excluded from an important part of that framework.
The official European Geoblocking Regulation refers to excluded services, including gambling activities involving monetary stakes. National licences and restrictions therefore remain important. If a Belgian casino website blocks you while you are travelling in another EU country, this is not automatically unlawful discrimination.
What happens when you try to log in from abroad?
The least serious outcome is a message stating that the service is not available in your location. Your account continues to exist, but you may temporarily be unable to play. Once you are back in Belgium and log in through a normal Belgian connection, access may automatically be restored. It is a good idea to fully close the app first and allow it to determine your location again.
An unusual location can also trigger a security check. A sudden login from another country may indicate travel, but it could also indicate misuse of an account. The casino may therefore send a verification code, request a new identity check or temporarily restrict the account as a precaution. This does not immediately mean that your balance has been lost or that the account will be permanently closed.
A foreign IP address can also be a technical error
IP-based geolocation is not always perfect. Mobile providers, corporate networks, hotel Wi-Fi and satellite connections can route internet traffic differently than expected. As a result, a player who is physically in Belgium may still be identified as a foreign user. In border regions in particular, a phone may accidentally connect to a mobile mast in another country.
If you receive a location warning at home or near the border, first switch Wi-Fi and mobile data off and back on separately. Check whether a VPN, privacy service, corporate profile or iCloud Private Relay is active. Then restart the app. If the error persists, send customer support a screenshot and provide your actual location, the type of connection used, your device and the time when the message appeared.
Why using a VPN is not a smart solution
A VPN routes your internet traffic through another server. This can make it appear as though you are connecting from Belgium when you are actually abroad. Technically, this may sometimes bypass a simple IP restriction. Legally and contractually, however, a VPN does not change your physical location.
Deliberately hiding your location may violate the casino’s terms and conditions. In addition, providers can recognise many VPN servers, data centres and unusual connection patterns. The result may actually be that you cannot log in, that the casino requests documents or that your account is temporarily blocked while the security department investigates the activity.
A VPN is not always deliberately enabled for gambling
Not every VPN warning indicates an attempt to bypass geoblocking. Business laptops sometimes automatically use a corporate VPN. Security apps may route internet traffic through a protected connection by default. Certain privacy features on smartphones and browsers can also change the visible IP address.
If you notice this before placing a bet, disable the service and do not repeatedly attempt to reconnect. If your account is blocked, explain honestly which application was active. A casino can usually assist you more effectively when it knows that a technical or business VPN was involved rather than an attempt to circumvent territorial restrictions.
Can the casino temporarily block your account?
Yes. A temporary restriction may be used to verify your identity, location and account security. The operator may ask for identification, proof of address, details of a recent payment method or an explanation of the foreign login. In some cases, you may still be able to log in and view your details but not deposit, play or withdraw until the review has been completed.
Such a review is not the same as permanently taking your money. The operator should be able to explain why certain functions have been restricted and what information is required. However, the process may take longer when several countries, unusual IP addresses or different payment methods are involved. Our step-by-step guide on a blocked casino withdrawal explains what information to collect if your withdrawal is also being held.
What happens to money already in your account?
A geographical restriction does not automatically invalidate your existing balance. The money normally remains linked to your verified player account. However, a withdrawal may be delayed if the operator first needs to check whether the account was used by its owner and whether any terms and conditions were breached.
Do not immediately add new payment methods or move money between different accounts. This may raise additional questions. Contact the official customer support team and ask whether you can withdraw your balance while abroad without being able to gamble. Certain functions may remain available while gambling is disabled, but this varies by provider and situation.
What happens if a game round is interrupted while travelling?
Suppose you start a game while you still have a valid connection and the app then detects a foreign location. The operator must be able to determine whether the bet had already been accepted and which outcome was recorded by the game server. A disappearing animation alone does not determine whether the round was valid.
Check your game history and balance before placing another bet. Record the round number, stake, time and error message. Ask customer support to check the provider logs if it is unclear how the round was settled. The geographical restriction and the financial settlement of an already registered game round are two separate issues.
Can you play at a local or international casino instead?
That depends on the laws of the country where you are staying and on the operator’s licence. A casino with a Belgian licence is not automatically legal in France, the Netherlands, Germany or Spain. The same applies in reverse: a casino licensed in another country is not automatically permitted to target Belgian players.
You should therefore check more than whether a website displays a licence from somewhere in the world. Find out whether the operator is legally allowed to accept players in the country where you are located. When you later return to Belgium, the safest option is to choose from the current list of legal Belgian online casinos. A foreign domain operated by the same brand may be subject to different conditions, limits and player-protection systems.
Be careful with foreign versions of well-known casino brands
International gambling companies often use different websites for different countries. The name and branding may look almost identical, while the legal operator and licence are different. Your Belgian account will therefore not necessarily work on the Dutch, French or international version. You should also not simply create a second account to bypass the restriction.
An additional account may conflict with rules on duplicate accounts, identity verification and self-exclusion. You should also carefully check the website address. Illegal operators and copycat sites regularly use brand names that closely resemble those of licensed casinos. If in doubt, read our guide on how to tell the difference between a legal and illegal online casino.
Does EPIS still apply when you travel abroad?
Belgian licensed operators check before participation whether a player is listed in the Excluded Persons Information System. Travelling does not cancel a Belgian exclusion, and using a VPN does not make an attempt to gamble permissible. Anyone trying to access a Belgian operator must take into account the same account and exclusion checks.
A foreign operator does not automatically use the Belgian EPIS system. However, that does not make such a website a permitted alternative. The operator must be legal in the country where the player is participating and may have its own exclusion register. Never try to bypass an exclusion through a foreign website or by changing your apparent location. More information is available in our explanation of how the EPIS list works.
How to avoid problems before you travel
Before travelling, check the terms and conditions and search the help centre for terms such as abroad, location, IP address, geoblocking and VPN. If you cannot find a clear answer, ask customer support in writing whether you are allowed to log in, play and withdraw money from your destination country. Keep their reply, as verbal information is more difficult to prove later.
Leave your account details unchanged if you are only travelling temporarily. A hotel address is not a new home address, and a foreign prepaid card is not automatically a suitable payment method. Also check whether privacy software starts automatically. The safest choice is not to gamble while travelling if the operator has not given you explicit permission.
What should you do if your account has already been blocked?
Do not keep trying to log in through different devices, IP addresses or VPN servers. This can make an ordinary location warning look like suspicious account activity. Take a screenshot of the message, note where you actually are and contact the casino through its official email address or chat service.
Ask which rule caused the restriction, whether it is a temporary security measure, which documents are required and what will happen to your balance and any pending withdrawals. Only submit documents through the secure account area or another official channel. If you do not receive a substantive response, you can build your case using our article on filing a complaint against a legal Belgian online casino.
The practical answer for Belgian players
Do not assume that your Belgian casino account will remain usable during every trip abroad. Some operators completely block foreign IP addresses, while others carry out additional checks or only restrict gambling. The rules of the country you are visiting and any restrictions imposed by game providers may also play a role.
Do not use a VPN to bypass a location restriction. It does not resolve the legal or contractual issue and may instead increase the likelihood of an investigation or temporary account restriction. Ask the operator for written permission before travelling. If you do not receive it or the answer remains unclear, wait until you are back in Belgium before playing.
