A VAD webinar on the line between video games and gambling
Video games are increasingly incorporating mechanisms similar to those found in gambling, blurring the lines, particularly for young people. A webinar organised by the VAD centre of expertise aims to analyse these developments, their risks and ways to address them.
A changing landscape in video gaming
Profound changes are taking place in video games. Mechanisms inspired by gambling are now being incorporated into many popular titles.
Loot boxes, wheels of fortune, random reward systems… all these elements introduce an element of uncertainty and chance into the gaming experience. In some cases, these features go even further, with virtual casino simulations accessible via in-game currency, sometimes purchased with real money. This blurring of the lines between play and chance alters players’ perceptions, particularly among younger players, who may struggle to identify the true nature of these mechanisms.
The VAD Centre of Expertise, which specialises in issues related to gambling and addiction, is sounding the alarm about this trend. According to its observations, the line between gamification and gambling mechanisms is becoming increasingly blurred.
The researchers’ perspective
Researcher Maya Geudens, who is involved in the multi-year Gam(e)(a)ble research project, will share in-depth analyses. This interdisciplinary project examines how teenagers perceive and experience this blurring of the lines between video games and gambling.
This webinar is primarily aimed at professionals interested in the topics of video games and gambling. It will take place online on 30 April 2026, from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm. Free of charge and limited to 200 participants, it offers an opportunity to explore a subject that is still little known to the general public.
