Is betting on elections legal in Belgium?
Betting on sports matches, TV programmes and even the weather has been around for years. But what about elections? In various countries, punters can place bets on political outcomes, such as presidential elections or which party will win the most votes. Belgian punters also regularly come across these markets at international bookmakers.
However, the situation in Belgium is less straightforward than many people think.
Political betting has been around for years
In countries such as the United Kingdom, election betting has long been popular. Major bookmakers there offer odds on national elections, party leaders and even individual constituencies.
During the US presidential elections, political bets can sometimes involve hundreds of millions of euros worldwide. Elections involving figures such as Donald Trump and Joe Biden, in particular, generated enormous betting volumes.
Belgian punters also see these kinds of bets appearing on international betting sites.
Belgian legislation remains strict
However, Belgium has one of the strictest gambling laws in Europe. The Belgian Gaming Commission monitors which bets may be legally offered by licensed operators.
In practice, legal sports betting focuses primarily on sporting events. Political betting exists in a grey area and is not usually actively offered by Belgian licensed operators.
This does not automatically mean that Belgian punters will never come across political bets. Some foreign websites do offer these markets, but that does not mean they are permitted under Belgian regulations.
Why election betting is a sensitive issue
Political betting regularly sparks debate worldwide. Critics fear that betting on elections could influence or trivialise the democratic process.
There are also concerns about manipulation and insider trading. Sports betting usually revolves around performance on the pitch, whereas elections are directly linked to politics, public opinion and societal consequences.
Proponents, however, see it differently. They argue that betting markets sometimes predict election results surprisingly well because thousands of people collectively assess expectations.
There are significant international differences
The rules governing political betting vary greatly from country to country.
In the United Kingdom, election betting is fully established with bookmakers such as William Hill and Bet365. In the United States, the situation was more difficult for many years, although new discussions have recently emerged there regarding prediction markets and political betting platforms.
For the time being, Belgium is clearly opting for a more cautious approach.
Belgian players must remain cautious
It remains important for Belgian gamblers to use only legal operators licensed by the Gaming Commission. Anyone who gambles via foreign websites without a Belgian licence not only faces legal risks but also lacks protection in the event of disputes or payment issues.
For this reason, betting on elections in Belgium remains, for the time being, primarily a topic that arouses curiosity but is legally sensitive.
It is unlikely that political betting will become as commonplace as football betting or casino games in the short term. Nevertheless, interest is growing worldwide, particularly as politics increasingly becomes part of online entertainment and the live news experience.
