Dice games, Dice slots and regular slots: what is the difference?

A game showing dice on the screen is not automatically a dice game in which you build combinations yourself. In Belgian online casinos, Dice games, Dice slots and regular slots often appear side by side. The names seem related, but they can refer to different ways of playing. The main difference lies in what you do during a round and how the game calculates a prize.

In a grid-based Dice game, you choose where the dice are placed. A Dice slot usually works with reels and winning symbol combinations, like a slot machine. Regular slots form a much broader category, with different themes and payout systems. To understand the differences, you need to look beyond the name or the image shown on the game tile.

Why the names can be confusing

The word “dice” explains the appearance of many games, but not their rules. Two titles may both display dice while one focuses on placing them in a grid and the other uses symbols on spinning reels.

In addition, “Dice game” is a broad international term. Other casino games involving dice may also be described in this way. In this article, we mainly use the term for the placement-based games found in Belgian casino offerings. Our introduction to Dice games and their popularity in Belgium provides more background.

It is therefore best to use the game rules as your starting point. The title tells you how a developer or casino presents the game. The rules screen tells you what actions are possible, which combinations count and how a payout is calculated.

What is a grid-based Dice game?

In a placement game, dice appear and you place them in available positions on a grid. The aim is to form combinations. The dice you receive and your choice of where to place them are two different parts of the same round.

Infinity Dice is a concrete example. The official game information for Infinity Dice from Air Dice mentions four grids, each measuring three by three positions. That structure is visibly different from a slot machine with five reels. The exact meaning of lines, points and bonus results belongs to the rules of this specific title.

The placement choice makes this type of game interactive. You look at what is already on the grid, which combinations are still possible and where the new dice could fit. That requires a different action from simply starting another spin.

However, this explanation should not be applied to every title containing the word “Dice”. The number of grids, available positions and scoring methods can differ. Our review of Infinity Dice and its grid mechanic shows how one fully developed game within this category works.

What is a Dice slot?

A Dice slot usually resembles a slot machine more closely in terms of gameplay. You choose a stake and start a spin. The game then evaluates the symbols that appear according to its payout rules. Dice may form part of those symbols without you placing them yourself in a grid.

Joker Ra Dice illustrates the difference well. Endorphina describes it on its own product page as a Dice slot. The game has five reels, four rows and one hundred fixed paylines. That is a reel-based structure, not a placement game with four separate dice grids.

The official rules and features of Joker Ra Dice also describe wilds, scatters and a gamble feature. Those functions belong to this specific title; they are not standard features of every Dice slot. The presence of a wild, for example, tells you nothing about the bonus rules of another game.

The theme can also extend far beyond dice. Joker Ra Dice uses Egyptian imagery. Anyone who wants to examine the individual features can find additional information in our review of Joker Ra Dice by Endorphina.

What do we mean by regular slots?

By regular slots, players usually mean slot machines without a specific Dice label. This is not a uniform type of game. A classic fruit machine, a video slot with an extensive bonus game and a title using cluster wins can all fall under this broad category.

Many slots use reels and paylines. Others evaluate groups of adjacent symbols or combinations across consecutive reels without fixed lines. That is why “regular slot” is also not enough to predict the rules. The screen layout and paytable provide more information.

The main difference from a Dice slot therefore does not necessarily lie in the basic action. Both can revolve around spinning reels and symbol combinations. A dice theme or Dice version does not automatically turn a game into a placement-based title. Our complete guide to online slot machines covers topics including RTP, random outcomes and different slot mechanics.

The three categories side by side

The comparison below describes common characteristics. It is still necessary to read the rules of each individual title.

Feature Dice game with placement Dice slot Regular slot
Game structure Grids and dice to be placed Usually reels with dice or themed symbols Reels or another symbol grid
Action during the round Choosing where the dice go Usually starting a spin Usually starting a spin
How prizes are determined Combinations, points and a game-specific paytable Game-specific paylines or combination rules Paylines, ways, clusters or other rules
Bonus features Depends on the title, for example Mystery Games Depends on the title Depends on the title

The table also shows why symbols alone are not enough. A die on a reel may simply be a payout symbol. A die that you place in a grid forms part of a decision within the gameplay.

How can you recognise the difference as soon as you open a game?

First, look at the action the game asks you to perform. Does a column of dice appear and do you have to choose where to place them? Then you are looking at a placement mechanic. Do reels spin and then display a fixed series of symbols? In that case, a slot mechanic is more likely.

Next, open the information menu. Look for explanations of paylines, points, clusters or other combinations. Also check whether the paytable lists amounts, stake multipliers or scores. These may look similar but do not always mean the same thing.

Imagine a fictional game showing a combination marked “20”. That could mean twenty points, but it could also mean twenty times a certain stake amount. Without the legend, you do not know what value is attached to the combination. A clear rules screen prevents you from mistaking points for euros.

Do Dice games give you more influence?

In a placement game, you make a choice that is usually absent from a standard spin. That is a genuine difference in how the game is controlled. However, it does not automatically mean that you remove the element of chance or can consistently beat the casino.

To say anything about the influence of your decisions on the outcome, you need to know how the specific game processes those choices. Can different placements lead to different scores? Under what conditions is the payout percentage calculated? Those questions cannot be answered using only the general term “Dice”.

There is also a difference between influencing an intermediate step and controlling the full outcome. You may be able to choose a position while the available dice remain random. It should therefore not automatically be compared with a puzzle that can be solved every round with enough skill.

Mystery Games are not a general term for free spins

According to Air Dice, Infinity Dice includes a bonus feature that can award, among other things, points, money or Mystery Games. This shows that a Dice game can contain several types of bonus results. They are not all the same and need to be explained separately.

The term Mystery Game should therefore not automatically be translated as free spin. Check what an awarded round costs, whether a separate stake applies, what score is required and which paytable is used. Our explanation of how Mystery Games work in dice games covers this mechanic in greater detail.

A bonus name alone is not proof that a round is favourable or free of charge. Nor does a striking animation change the settlement rules. Your balance and the stake information matter more than how the game presents the bonus.

RTP: compare the game, not just the category

RTP stands for Return to Player: the theoretical payout percentage under the conditions of the game model. It is not a promise about how much money you will have left after a short session. A Dice label by itself says nothing definite about this value.

A simple fictional example makes the distinction clear. With an RTP of 96%, the theoretical return over a very large number of rounds is €96 for every €100 in total stakes. That does not mean a player who deposits €100 will personally get €96 back.

Total stakes are also different from the original deposit. If someone deposits €20 and then wagers winnings again, the cumulative amount staked can exceed €20. You should therefore not use the deposit amount as if it were automatically the denominator in an RTP calculation.

A higher payout percentage also says nothing about how results will develop during a single session. The meaning of that percentage should be kept separate from the type of game control: placing, spinning or making a bonus choice.

Volatility and playing speed answer different questions

Volatility concerns the distribution of outcomes. RTP describes a theoretical average; volatility helps explain why games with a similar average can still produce very different wins and losses.

The pace of play also deserves attention. With a fictional stake of €0.50, every losing round costs the same amount. Twenty rounds represent €10 in total stakes, while one hundred rounds represent €50. That difference comes from the number of bets placed, regardless of whether the symbols show dice or fruit.

An interactive game is therefore not automatically cheaper to play. And a slot with a simple button does not necessarily have to be played quickly. Your stake, the number of rounds and the decision to stop remain separate choices.

A Dice version is not automatically the same game

Two titles may share the same name, characters or background while one version adds “Dice”. Do not assume without checking that their payout rules are identical. Compare both paytables and the information about bonus features.

The same applies to recognising a game from its tile. A familiar face or logo tells you little about the number of reels, scoring rules or the conditions of an extra round. Compare the exact version you actually open.

For Belgian players, the availability of a game is also a different question from how it works. A developer’s international catalogue does not prove that every title is available from every Belgian operator. Check the current offering and the operator’s licence separately.

What information should you check before placing a bet?

Start with the total stake per round. Then check which combinations pay, whether scores first need to reach a threshold and what any bonus result actually involves. Next, look for the RTP information and any explanation of gameplay choices.

Also decide in advance how much time and money you are willing to spend on a session. Understanding the rules makes a game of chance easier to follow, but it does not prevent losses. An interactive choice, a high multiplier or a familiar theme is not a reason to raise your limit.

Ultimately, anyone trying to distinguish these categories will benefit most from three concrete questions: am I placing dice, starting reels or using another combination system? After that, the individual paytable determines how results are settled. This allows you to recognise the difference without assigning more certainty to a game name than the name can actually provide.
