Betting on an absent player, substitute or withdrawal: what rules apply?

Is your player on the bench or did they get injured during the warm-up? Find out straight away whether your sports bet remains valid, is lost or should be refunded by your bookmaker.

You placed a bet on a player to score, record a certain number of shots, win their match or reach a specific statistic. A few minutes before kick-off, you discover that they are not in the starting line-up, have been ruled out altogether or will begin the game on the bench.

Is your bet automatically cancelled? Not necessarily.

Bets on individual performances follow rules that vary depending on the sport, the market offered and each bookmaker’s terms and conditions. The key question is therefore not simply whether the player started, but whether they officially took part in the event according to the criteria of the selected market. To understand the impact on an overall ticket, such as odds being reduced to 1.00 or the dead heat rule, you can also consult our complete guide to void bets and settlement rules.

Here is a quick overview before looking at the rules case by case:

Statut du pari Impact sur un combiné Condition
Player does not enter the game at all (100% on the bench / absent) Void / Refunded Odds reduced to 1.00 Applies to standard markets requiring participation.
Substitute player (comes on in the 89th minute) Valid (Win or Loss)  Selection remains active Simply entering the game generally validates the market.
Starting player goes off injured after 5 minutes Valid (Win or Loss) Selection remains active As the player took part in the event, the short playing time does not trigger a refund.
Tennis withdrawal before the first point Void / Refunded Odds reduced to 1.00 As no point was played, the market is invalid.

Absent player, substitute or bench player: what happens to the bet?

Does an absent player automatically void the bet?

Yes, in most cases. On many individual markets such as goalscorers, assists or shots, a player who does not take part in the match at all is treated as a non-starter. The bet is then generally declared void and the stake is refunded in real money, or the odds are reduced to 1.00 in an accumulator.

Example: You stake €20 on a goalscorer. He gets injured in the warm-up and is not included on the team sheet. Your stake is refunded.

What happens if the player starts on the bench?

The fact that a player is not in the starting line-up does not automatically cancel the bet. It depends on whether they actually take part.

  • If they stay on the bench for the entire match without coming on: the bet is void.
  • If they enter the game, even in the 85th minute: the bet becomes officially valid. If they do not score, the bet loses.

Coming on for a few seconds or going off injured early

As soon as a player steps onto the pitch, the participation condition is generally fulfilled:

  • Comes on in the 89th minute: Even if the player does not touch the ball, the bookmaker considers them to have participated. The bet is not refunded.
  • Injured after 3 minutes: As the player started the match, they had the theoretical opportunity to achieve the required performance. The bet remains active and may be settled as a loss.

Differences between market types and statistics

Anytime goalscorer vs first goalscorer

These two very popular markets have different void rules:

  • Anytime goalscorer: If your player comes on during the match, they still have the opportunity to score. The bet is therefore valid.
  • First goalscorer: If the first goal has already been scored before your substitute enters the game, the market can no longer be achieved. Depending on the bookmaker, the selection may then be voided or settled under specific rules.

Bets on shots, assists and statistics in basketball and football

Individual player stat markets, such as “Player X over 2.5 shots on target” or “Player Y over 15.5 points in basketball”, are usually strict. If a player plays for 2 minutes, records 0 shots and returns to the bench, the bet is lost rather than voided.

Special clauses: “Must Start” and “All-In”

Pay attention to the wording of the market when placing your bet:

  • “Must Start” rule: The player must be in the starting line-up for the bet to be valid. If they begin on the bench, even if they later come on, the bet is refunded.
  • “All-In” / “Whether participating or not” rule: Common on long-term markets, such as “Top goalscorer at the Euros”. The stake remains active even if the player later withdraws from the competition.

Rules by sport: tennis, MMA and combat sports

Tennis: pre-match withdrawal vs retirement during the match

  • Withdrawal before the match: If no point has been played, a match-winner bet is declared void and refunded.
  • Retirement during the match: Settlement varies by operator. Some validate the bet if at least one set has been completed, while others void everything if the match is not finished. However, a market that has already been settled, such as “Winner of the first set” when the retirement occurs in the second set, remains a win or loss.

MMA and boxing: opponent change or withdrawal

A combat sports bet relates to a specific matchup, such as Fighter A vs Fighter B. If one fighter withdraws and a replacement opponent is named, the original market no longer applies. The bet is voided and the stake is refunded.

Impact on accumulators and Bet Builders

Does a player withdrawal cancel the entire accumulator?

No. In a standard accumulator, the selection involving the absent player is usually neutralised with odds of 1.00.

Example calculation:

Original bet: Player A to score (2.50) × Team B to win (1.80) × Player C over 2.5 shots (1.70) = Total odds of 7.65.
If Player C is ruled out: 2.50 × 1.80 × 1.00 = New odds of 4.50.

The more complex case of the Bet Builder

A Bet Builder combines several linked selections from the same match. If the player selection is voided because of a withdrawal, some bookmakers recalculate the overall odds using the remaining selections, while others cancel the entire Bet Builder.

What to do in case of a dispute with your bookmaker

If your player bet was settled as a loss even though you believe it should have been refunded, you can send a clear request to customer support asking for an explanation. If the problem continues or you believe the bookmaker is acting unfairly, you can submit a complaint by following the steps in our guide.

Is my bet void if my player starts on the bench?

Not automatically. If they enter the game during the match, their participation validates the bet. If they remain on the bench for the entire match, the bet is void.

Is a player who goes off injured after 5 minutes refunded?

No. As the player started the match, the participation condition has been met. The bet remains active.

What happens to my accumulator if a player is ruled out?

The selection involving the absent player is reduced to odds of 1.00. The rest of the accumulator remains active.

Is a player listed on the team sheet considered to have participated?

Not necessarily. For most bookmakers, being named on the bench is not enough: the player must actually enter the field of play to be considered a participant.
